muffler recommendations

Taking my Cutlass in for a new exhaust shortly. Looking for recommendations on which mufflers to get. The shop carries Flowmaster and Dynomax. I'm looking for a slightly louder than stock, but mellow sound. Also I don't want any droning at cruise. A 65 mph cruise is 3200 rpm . Since my 330 is stock, a good sound is more important than max flow. What are your thoughts on what muffler would suit my needs?

The dynomax will have less drone.

I have Dynomax Super Turbos PN17749. They have a smooth, mellow tone that is not raspy. Most people have had good experiences with these mufflers and they are frequently the "go to" solution when replacing other muffler brands that have droning issues.

Don't forget to ask the exhaust shop doing the install if they have house brand mufflers. Most exhaust shops will carry their own "generic" brand which is just a Dynomax / Flowmaster clone that will sound the same and save you some money.

Dynomax. I have never heard of anybody not being satisfied with them although I am sure somebody is since you can't please everybody.

And less restriction. The (no)Flowmasters are routinely the most restrictive "performance" mufflers in every published flow test I've seen. How that can be the case while simultaneously being obnoxiously loud and droning is a miracle of audio engineering.

Thanks for the info. I was leaning toward Dynomax super turbos and you've helped me make up my mind! I will ask the shop if their house brand is similar though.

They probably make more $$$ on their house brand.

Just got the new exhaust installed. Went with the Dynamax Super Turbos and true duals. Happy with the sound although a bit louder would have been ok. Great sound for an Olds. Definitely like that there is no droning. Thanks for the recommendations .

They’ll get louder after a decade or so. I have noticed mine getting louder after 15+ years. Insides must be going away, I always wished they made the same muffler in stainless. We replaced the mufflers (17749?) on red car last year after 11-12 CT winters as a full time daily driver, at least one was coming apart.

I used flowmaster 50 series on a couple builds years ago and I thought they sounded pretty good. A few years ago I used some magnaflows on my truck and the drone was unbearable. I’m going to be redoing the exhaust on the olds soon, so I have the same decision to make. I’ve used Borla on the F100 I’m currently building. They sound great, but I haven’t got it on the highway yet. May heed the advice here and go with the dynomax on the cutlass.
