fuel pumps
fuel pumps
ok fellers...... my 67 fuel pump died. the car was actually still kind of running on 1/2 lb of pressure. so i go get, not one, but two new fuel pumps. hooked up the first and it pegged my gauge at 10+ lbs and over ran my carb. second one form a different parts house, exact same issue, even though they both show they are factory set at 5-7 lbs. whats up with that? bad luck? chinesium parts? the girl at the counter started to blame me for not diagnosing another issue. i told her there is no regulator, just a tank, line, pump, carb. i wanted to tell her ive owned the car longer than shes been alive......whats goin on?

I've been lucky with the mechanical fuel pump on my 71 98. Probably because I recently replaced it with a good parts store unit that was on my spare 455.
I gave up on mechanical fuel pumps for my 86 Ford F250. I went to an electric.

I had a similar problem years ago and ended up using one of these:

Every new mechanical pump I've used over the past 5+ years has put out waaay more pressure than it's supposed to. The pumps for our cars will all claim they're 'factory set' at 5-7psi and will actually put out closer to 8-10. I've learned you must plumb in a gauge to see what you're actually getting to the carb and, if necessary, you'll need to add a regulator as Fun71 suggests. That will allow you to dial the pressure back to somewhere around 6psi.
FWIW I have a new-to-me '66 Cutlass and started having flooding issues, and found that the mechanical pump was putting out 9psi. The pump isn't new, but I also don't know how old it is. Looks like it's been on there a while.
I recently replaced my mechanical fuel pump and ended up cutting my steel fuel line and adding a pressure reg.
After a fair amount of online research, my conclusion was, most likely 1 manufacturer for all brands and that a whole batch of pumps were/are manufactured with the wrong spring . Chinamen don’t really care , ain’t no 455 Rockets over there .
