F-85/Cutlass, both, one or the other.

F-85/Cutlass, both, one or the other.

Wondering if they are mutually exclusive or what. For example in the '64 and '65 years, I know a cutlass is always a F-85. Are all cutlasses and 442's F-85's? How come on some cars I see just cutlass on the fender and cars during the same year both Cutlass and F-85 emblems on the fenders. I also notice on some websites or postings when describing their 442 they will say it's a F-85 or cutlass? I suppose a 442 must be an F-85, but doesn't have to be a cutlass? How do I know if my car is a true 1964 Cutlass? Is this relayed on tags or in some way shape or form? So many dang iterations of the same model it's quite confusing.

According to the 11/72 Olds parts catalog, in 1964, the models were designated F85 std. or dlx. except 3227, 3237, 3267 which were F85 and Cutlass. In 1965, 3827, 3837, 3867 were F85 and Cutlass. In 1966, 3300-3600 were F85, and 3800 were Cutlass (not dual designated). In 1967, 3300-3400 were F85, 3500-3600 were Cutlass, 3800 were Cutlass Supreme.

in 65 if its a hardtop, its a cutlass. yours is a hardtop im sure its the same in 64. check your other thread i put a good link there.

What's really confusing is that the parts books often consider all 61-later A-body to be F85. It will list applications as F85 or 3XXX but not Cutlass, so you have to know what body style or series you're looking up parts for. Then around 1973 they added "A" into the mix for A-body.

But to the basics: F85 was the original A-body car starting 1961, then Cutlass came about as a higher trim level. Then there are Standard and Deluxe versions of F85 as Rund pointed out. Supremes landed in 1966 as an even higher trim level.

Be glad you're not deciphering 1964-5 88s.
