Another new member- long thread
Hello everyone.
I just found this site and with the high member count and activity level on this site, decided it was worth joining.
My name is John and I'm from Palmyra, NY. I picked up my '70 Supreme in June of this year, but that's not the beginning of the story.
This Olds was my first hot rod. I purchased it in 1984 when I was 19 and proceeded to beat the tar out of it. I got my first speeding ticket in it (97 in a 55 coming down from 120 plus), won a few street races in it, caused a "little bit" of trouble with it, and also met my wife in it. I drove it for 4 years like this when I put it away very tired and hurt, needing a resto.
I bought my house in 1993 bringing the Olds with me with intentions to eventually restoring her. I finally even built a big enough garage to restore it too.
But alas, it wasn't meant to be. In 2002 I officially had a mid-life crisis and had to have istant gratification. I bought a 72' Skylark GSX clone and put the Olds out front with a 'for sale' on it. It took only a week to sell that Olds. My wife kept telling me how much I was going to regret letting it go too (she was going to eat those words eventually).
The Olds only went about 40 miles away, and even though I didn't keep visual tabs on it, I did talk to the new owner from time to time as he told me his plans for it.
I eventually went through 3 more cars before my wife and I picked up a '69 Mercury Cougar Convertible a bout a year later. That car is a survivor car that I'll not get too much into since this is NOT a Mercury site.
Then about a year ago I came into some exta funds and was getting ready to pull the trigger on an investment quality Cougar when my phone rang. The guy I sold the Olds to was now a newlywed and his new wife wanted a Hot Rod truck built for her. The Olds had to go and I had first shot.
After reminding my wife how much SHE made me regret selling it in the first place, I went to look at it and then bought it back. Hopefully it's going to stay with me now.
Some of the specs,
468, ported Edelbrock heads, port matched Torker intake, 11:1 pistons, custom ground Engle cam w/565 lift, 3" flowmaster exhaust, TH350 tranny, 12 bolt Chevy w/3.73 posi.
The car was rebuilt with more of an eye on the dragstrip than the street. Currently I'm trying to undo some of the strip compromises that have been made for a little more streetability.

All the HVAC is gone (not too big of a deal since it cleans up the firewall), a lot of hacking was done to the electrical system which I'm trying to work with and repair, the tranny should have been a TH400 instead of the TH350 in it now, and the fuel system is marginal for the engine.
As stated I'm playing around with the electricals, I'm trying not to beat on it too hard so I don't blow the tranny before I upgrade (maybe a built 200-4R), and I'm re-doing the fuel system with a 1/2" mostly Aeromotive return style fuel system, with a 1/2" fuel sending unit from RobbMc performance.
I just finished up upgrading to an internally regulated alternator also.
