68 Cutlass S Emblem Placement
68 Cutlass S Emblem Placement
When I purchased my car, the prior owner filled in the holes for the front fender Cutlass S emblems. Does anyone have the hole locations so that I can install these emblems?
Well, keep in mind that the emblems are held on with speed nuts. Thus you will need to access the back side of the fender. If the previous owner merely filled the holes, you will feel the filler on the back side.
If you have tiny hands you can probably do the job by reaching behind the fender at the door jamb with the door wide open, but I know my hands couldn't reach in that far.
I recommend removing the bolts that hold the inner fender in place, removing the bolts on the underside of the fender, and pulling the fender out at the bottom. Place something like a 2x4 in there to keep the fender from smashing your hand. While you are in there, clean out all of the crud that has accumulated inside, in order to prevent future rust.
With this amount of access, you should be able to feel exactly where the holes need to be.
Finally, the exact location was not a science. A little deviation from car to car is not out of the question.

Actually I have a tubular clip that just pushes into the hole and expands as it goes in. That way when I wax my car, I can remove the emblems. Wesco Automotive uses them,so I have used them on my other emblems and they work fine. If you can send me the measurements, then I can drill and install the emblem's without ever having to get behind the fender.
I have this same problem with my '72 Supreme. Not only the fender badges, but also the trunk letter's "OLDSMOBILE" were removed and the holes filled in. That was easy, I just accessed the holes from behind and drilled them out. On the fenders, I think I'm just going to pull them, as I removed the inner fender but still did not have enough room in there for a drill. Since I'm prepping the car for paint, it's worth the extra hassle of removing the fenders so I don't end up with any "extra" holes. The only other option is to sand down to bare metal until you hit bondo, or whatever was used to fill them. I checked the assembly manual and there are no specs as to exactly where the holes are to be. Lewt me know what method you use and how it turns out. Chumley
