65 Tilt Column interchange

Hi,

I have a 65 Cutlass I am thinking about adding a tilt column to it,. I have a 66 Buick Skylark that I am parting out which has a tilt column.

they look similar but will a 66 column fit properly in a 65?

I have heard Buick and Pontiac are interchangeable and Chevy is different is this true and where does the Oldsmobile fit?

Both are column shifted, will the levers interchange as well?

Regards,

They will interchange and the levers with also work. The lower bowl may be slightly but hardly noticeable when installed. 64-66 are the same.

I'm not sure how you intended the question about the levers interchange, so here goes.
Levers from a NON TILT column in 1966 and 1965 Oldsmobile and Buick will not fit a tilt column, not the shift lever, not the turn signal lever.
Levers from a tilt 66 Buick tilt column will interchange with a 65 Oldsmobile tilt column, fit and function fine, but of course they look different.
The tilt columns from 65 and 66 column shift lever also have a very different "spring" to push the shift lever back down when released. The spring can be broken if it is not installed properly when removing/replacing the shift lever. The install procedure is covered in one of the factory manuals, chassis/ body, but I don't remember which.
Additionally the turn signal switches are completely different on tilt vs non tilt. Contact me if you wish an explanation about all that.

You can cut a 64-66 turn signal lever off, thread it and use it for the tilt lever. You can also cut the turn signal lever, thread it and use it. They may be just a touch short but will work as designed.

Hi again ,

Thanks for the info, guess I should have been a little clearer.

My Cutlas has a stud column shift
donor 66 Buick tilt column shift

So to do it correctly I would need to find 65 Olds tilt levers?

Regards,

64-66 Olds levers are the same. As I posted, you can buy new levers for the Olds and cut/modify/thread them to work in the Buick column. What do you mean by 'stud' column shift?

Hi again,

Std not stud, meaning standard colum shift, spell check is a pain at times lol

is the shift lever interchangeable, can I use the one from my 65 Olds and use it in the tilt 66 column?

Regards,

OK,should a a good swap. Change the levers and you should be ready to go. Be aware there is a jumper wire harness that goes between the lower switch and the harness as the tilt will not connect to the underdash harness without it.

Hi,

Yes I have the harness, just wondering if the shifter lever will swap between the two as heard they were different and one of the replies seems to state this as well.

Regards,
