1970 Cutlass Water Pump Tutorial

Hey,

With the help of you guys, I was able to change the water pump of my 70 Cutlass SX and get it back to driving condition. I wanted to help anyone else that might come across this problem so I quickly made a little website with a tutorial on this. It can be found here:

http://www.mysx455.com/2010/09/tutor...70-cutlass.php

I'll also use this site as a place to keep track of all the stuff I do to my car.

Nice job on the tutorial and the website. I"m about to tear into a 70 Cutlass so if you could keep these tutorials coming I will finish my car much quicker!

Nice tutorial! I'll be doing this job on my '70 SX in the next week or two since I think its timing gear (behind the water pump) is stripped (RPM readings were up on the tic-toc-tach, and it ran rougher and rougher and sputtered out along the highway, like when a fuel pump goes out.) It's been sidelined since late May but now it's the best part of convertible season in PA so i need to get it going again soon!

So far so good! I've driven my car for about 40 miles since the exchange and haven't seen any problem.

But yea, if I could do this, anyone can and again, if you need more detail on a step, let me know. I have a lot more pictures of the process that I didn't upload.

The only part that I feel it helped to have another person was loosening the A/C compressor (the other end of the A/C belt that is not the pump) just because it did take more force and a strange angle.

Good Luck

Doing it myself saved me a good 200 bucks from what the mechanics were going to charge.

speaking of a/c compressor, i ordered the water pump with the ac hookup, cause my car came equipped with one originally, and was wondering if that makes a difference if the actual ac isnt there anymore?

I'm honestly not to sure what the difference would be, but I feel like you did the right thing getting how it is originally. Probably the bolts are in different places or something.

I barely have enough time to work on my car, let alone put together a site like that! Good job- I used to have a '70 SX in another life many moons ago. How long have you had yours?

I've had mine for about 4 months now. I love the black top on your old one. Its such a great look. I'm thinking about straying away from my originality and getting mine done black and converting the interior.

so a suggestion for your website, take it or leave it. i followed your steps verbatim(sp) and the part with the power steering was column and the bolt on the bottom. maybe add a picture of that one, took me a little bit to find out what you were talking about and i think i took off too many bolts lol. but other than that GOOD wording and everything on it

I'll dig around and see if I have any better pictures of that section. As I mentioned, the power steering part was the most difficult in my opinion just because it was tough to get to all the bolts (that and I had to borrow my neighbors wrench) Thanks for the input.
