You'd need a taller hood for sure.

2 stroke diesel engines sound gnarly. They can be doing 3k rpms and sount like it's doing 24k rpm lol . I wonder if it's even possible for an engine that big to spin to 1000 rpm. I wonder what kind of power it makes at 1000 lol.

You mean just before it bends a rod?

Notice the lack of counterbalances on the rod throws - this is clearly a very low-revving engine:

Yep, very low rpms. Did you read the no and torque output. Nuts

I wonder the life span of an engine that spins that low of an rpm but puts that much power out .

wel, if you figure that most moden container ships cruise at about 30mph, and assume that they travel on average about 5 days out of every week, that means they go nearly 200,000 miles a year.

If they need a refit about every 5 years, then they're getting their bearings checked and possibly overhauled about every million miles.

That's just a guess, though.

I'm surprised it's a 2 stroke. My weed eater is a 2 stroke gasoline engine. It's a POS. I've heard that there are a number of industrial 2 stroke diesel engines in use.

That is definitely a BIG engine.

2 stroke turbocharged diesel and 2 stroke gas engine are two completely different things.

All truly heavy duty diesels are 2 stroke turbos, as far as I know.

5,608,310 lb-ft of torque and up to 108,920 BHP!!! Now I want to see the dyno that could handle that!

Hey Kyle I was looking @ some older threads, I see you were getting rebuild info for your 77 olds from cutlassefi ( Mark ) I believe, Just a ? Did you ship your motor from Manitoba to him in the U.S , what kind of work did you do to it, I'm considering buying a used 350 olds off Kijiji up here and would like to know how it went. Maybe a cost as well would be helpful.
Thanks Eric

Hey 76, he is doing a build for me eventually. I wanted to start early next year but things just weren't in our favor this year. Waiting for 2013 to leave

The GMC -56 and -71 series diesel engines are all two stroke. That's why they have the Roots scavenger pumps on the crankcase.

As for the engine in this thread, these engines and photos have been around for close to 20 years now. The article linked in the first post DOES have some new photos, especially the bent rod, so thanks for providing the link.
