On really old equipment, the capacitors are paper/cardboard tubes, and the electrolyte dries out. The restoration trick is to hollow out the tube and slide a modern capacitor inside so it looks like an original part.
That's a good point; it's really a simple fix to R&R the old cap(s) to get that baby blasting again.
61°F here & absolutely gorgeous. High today ~82°F with the same conditions for the ensuing week. I haven't played golf all week and doubtful I'll play for at least another week as I hopefully rest/repair an aching rotator cuff in the left shoulder. Daily heat application(s) and two massage therapy sessions next week.
Chris, you asked quite a while back why I didn't switch my car from bench to buckets. . . .
-- Yesterday it rained cats and dogs all day. Tomorrow we are going to "Trek the Mighty Mac" on our quads. It's a event where you can ride your quad or side by side across the Mackinac bridge one way. Should be fun I hope weather co-operates! I walked the bridge back in the 90's and it is so amazing!
Greg - I really like the all blue interiors, I'm sure you're glad you left it in the original style. Hope you have fun on the Mac Trek, safe travels.

Norm - It's 45°F here at 0700, supposed to get to about 75° today, absolutely beautiful. I had a shoulder injury years ago, described by the orthopedic surgeon as a bunch or micro-tears in the connective tissues of the shoulder caused by overuse, similar to tennis elbow. The only way it finally started getting better was ultrasound generated deep tissue heat treatments, given at the orthopedic sports medicine rehab facility. Are those what you are getting when you describe daily heat applications, or are you trying to apply heat yourself?
Norm - I hope that works for you. My injury was caused by my weightlifting regimen. At first, I reduced the weight I was lifting, then I took a week off, then took 2-weeks off, then a month off, and almost immediately after going back to lifting, the pain returned. After getting professional help, I started getting relief almost immediately, and after about a month of treatment I was able to resume my lifting and the pain never came back.
Two years ago some may recall I rented a boom lift and cut down an old 40’ Ash tree then assisted a neighbor in cutting down several smaller trees for them (the current widow and her then living husband). That resulted in a lot of pain and a cortisone injection - no golf for at least one month as I recall.
James - Agree this aging process isn’t for sissies. I “think” I overextended building the wall for a long period of time, I noticed the pain creeping up when I was applying pressure to the boards as I was cutting them up to create the 7’ fencing boards - a simple thing but repetitive motion and pressure. The darn thing is now popping and cracking - probably tore the tendon from one of the cuff muscles. I did a self diagnosis to determine which area of the cuff I tore. I can’t recall the 4 muscles, there is an acronym to remember them (SITS), but I can’t even remember what the acronym stands for LOL. Pretty darn sure it’s the muscle I was using buttering bricks though. I have good range of motion in three distinct areas but pain in only one area - thumb up and out 90 degrees.
Chris - The IR heat sensors thing is the definite way to go. I recall they sell them for knees if I’m not mistaken. I’ll look online later today to see if they sell one for rotator cuffs. Right now I’m going to self manage this unless it progressively worsens.

Norm - Like I said, I really hope it gets better for you with the time off and home treatments. Just wanted you to know the ultra sound deep heat treatments really worked well and fast for me. The orthopedic surgeon told me that home treatments will not deliver the heat deep enough into the tissue to increase the blood flow enough to aid the healing process. Of course this was 15 or 20-years ago, there may be home devices now that are available???
Jeff - BTW, this dryer is entirely electro-mechanical. Hotpoint at least 40+ years of age. Not much to it honestly. I'd bet it will withstand the next apocalpyse.
Facebook Memories just reminded me that one year ago today, the thermal fuse crapped on my dryer.
Chris - A quick search reveals numerous devices are available. I’ll spend some time reviewing several. A large range of prices and functions to choose from.
Quick day at work. I went in at 6, left at 11. Spent 2 1/2 hours at Awful house. It's beautiful here, gonna get some more stuff moved to the house.
Norm I think you need a hot tub. Sit in that a couple hours, that will get deep heat to your muscles. I've been eyeing the bathroom at the new place, thinking about installing one of those old people bubble bath units. I'm not old, but that looks so cool. Man I'd never leave the house.
Greg if they only let you ride across the bridge one way, how do you get home? I almost bought a Cutlass convertible with a bench seat and fold down armrest. It was a 70, light blue with blue interior and blue top. I hate light blue but this was a pretty car. It just needed too much for what the guy wanted. Automatic shift on the column of course, I think if it had power windows I would have bought it.
No work tomorrow. I can stay up really late, and then get up early for Awful house. Gonna be nice all weekend.
Now I have the ingredients for homemade beef stew on my shopping list. You’re quite the inspiration, James. I love making a nice slow cooked stew during this time of the year as the season begins to change. Thanks for the idea.
I have both turnip & rutabaga in my beef stew shopping list. My Dad loved both of them in beef stew & I acquired a taste for them (esp. rutabaga) in stews. Of course the obligatory sour dough bread loaf to sop up the juice.
Good evening guys,
James and Norm, you're making me hungry again with all that talk about beef stew, and I ate a big dinner.
Got back from my brother-in-law's place about an hour ago. We only stayed from about 5 to 8 because my wife still isn't feeling very well from her surgery. Car Show tomorrow in the little town of Millstadt, Illinois, about 35-miles away from me. Its a charity event, the local historic society is raising money to save their only noticeable landmark, a water tower. The St. Louis Old's Club's Show is Sunday and I'm going to that too. Counting this weekend, there's really only 4-weeks left in the show season around here and I'm gonna pack in as many as the weather will allow.
Got a notice today reminding me my 4-4-2 's insurance renewal is coming up in mid-November, which I have with Hagerty. I keep a close watch on several sites, including this one, of 4-4-2's for sale, especially '67's. I've noticed over the past year the sale prices of like quality '67's has increased, and if I was guessing I would have said $5K - $10K over what they were a year ago. Tonight I used Hagerty's online Valuation Tool and it said the prices had increased ~$8K over the past year. I'm going to do some more analysis, but I'm seriously going to need to consider raising my total loss valuation limit on my policy. Sounds like a good project for Monday.
Hope everyone has a great weekend! I'll definitely take a bunch of pics at the All Old's Show on Sunday.
Quick morning at Awful house. I was the only one there, all my other friends were off doing something else. I also know that no one is going to be there tomorrow, so we're sleeping in. I'll have to tell Tiger that before we go to bed tonight.
Beautiful here and rather chilly. Great day for a car show. They didn't have it last year and I hate missing it because there's so many cars. They'll have food vendors and whatnot, it's a good time.
Guess I can putter around here a little before I head out. Hope everyone has a good day.
Something flung a craving on me for toasted pound cake for breakfast. So I made one
it only has 3 sticks of butter in it. I think it needs more when I toast it

My mother ( and now i) always floured the beef and browned it to make the gravy. The only difference in her recipe is I that I cook the beef in "better than bouillon beef," to tenderize it before adding vegetables
The car show was a success. I'm not one to take pictures but I did take a few. Lots of people, and there were several I didn't get that I wanted because people just would not move. I'll try to post them later.
Stopped by the house on the way home. The guy was supposed to be there getting stuff around noon, I was there at noon and he wasn't. So I thought he might be there now. No, but he had been. Saw my neighbor out waxing his airplane so I walked over to introduce myself. Super nice guy, had a nice talk. Also figured out where I can build a fence for Tiger.
Just beautiful out today. Sunny, nice temp, almost perfect. Gonna work out in the yard this evening until it gets dark.
Good evening.guys,
James that pound cake looks to die for and Norm the.stew looks delicious!
Nice little car show today, nice small town atmosphere, and nice folks. Really tough format, making it very hard to bring home any hardware. They had 20-year span classes, I was in 1960 - 1979, by far the biggest class, and they were awarding only one trophy in each class, ouch, talk about tough!
Several guys from the St. Louis Old's Club came, so I decided to just take pics of the Old's, except for a few miscellaneous shots. The All Old's Show is tomorrow, should have a whole bunch of Old's pics tomorrow, a few may be duplicates of today.
Hope everyone has a great evening!
Water tower they are raising money restore as a historic landmark.
Okay here is the first picture I took, complete with my fingers, this is a 70 Pace Car. I always laugh at this car because it has every conceivable option on it, and I'm not sure the Pace Cars were ever loaded up like that. Nice looking car, and it sounded nice when the guy was leaving. It does have the Y74 on the cowl tag, but that's the only code. Certainly Fisher would have had to drill a hole or ran a wire or something for the power windows or locks, the 8 track, the dual gate, the AC, whatever. This car has it all.
This is a 65 or 66 Imperial. The car wasn't as nice as the picture makes it look but hey, it's an Imperial.
It always amazes me the amount of work people put in to make a car look this shabby. Very authentic. Or as Aretha Franklin would say, the Blues Brother, ***** they still owe you money, fool!
Just as I was leaving for the show someone texted a picture of this car to me. I said cool, I'll see it in a little while. Turns out it belongs to a guy I know who's in the club. He's also a Delta pilot but I've never seen him on the line. Beautiful car. Hadn't seen him in awhile, had a nice chat with him. The people around the car in this picture were pontificating on what a poor car and a poor boat it was.
And that's all the pictures I took. There was a 66 Valiant convertible I wanted to take a picture of, too many people. Quite a few Olds convertibles there, and a 70 442 coupe done up as a W30 and I think it's a fake. A couple 57 Chevy's, a beautiful 58 Belvidere all white, replete with bumper wings and a continental spare, lots of early Tbirds, and a few trucks. Nice show. Glad I went. Saw a guy I used to work with, had a nice talk with him.

Jamesbo is this something new? I actually typed in the word s-h-i-t-(because that's the line from the movie) and when I pushed send the asterisks replaced it. Big Brother at work? The church editing our posts?
Hi guys, someone asked how you got back across bridge if rode quad only one way. Well what they did is you had to register on line and tell them where you were staying the night before if locally. The Friday before, everyone unloaded trailers, etc and staged their rigs at a huge parking lot near the bridge at Mackinaw City ( lower Peninsula ). It was guarded over night. Then you would take your trailer where you wanted to keep it overnight. We had a huge trailer that would carry our 5 quads which we took to my buddy's campsite over on the St. Ignace side (Upper Peninsula). On Saturday morning they would pick up up in a school bus and take you to the starting point. They started leaving on atvs from there at about 11:00. We left about 11:30. Rode across bridge then thru St Ignace to a huge hockey arena on north end of town where they fed us a great lunch. They said there was 800 atvs though it looked like more. It was great time weather was a little cloudy but no rain.
-- Well I hate to say it but I guess since it is Sept. 26 I should be putting things away for winter, including Olds. Have a good one guys.
Over here we currently have a brief dip in temps, clouds, and maybe even some rain from the remnants of a Pacific storm system, but after that it's gonna be back to business as usual with near 100 degree temps. We prolly have another 3-4 weeks until the temperature drops for good and it's convertible weather.
