Norm if you were closer we could form our own flying club. Hell, I own property on an airport I could just taxi down the road and take off. Not sure my 757 would fit down the driveway. Slowly the flying bug is creeping back, but I don't pay much attention to it. I wonder what the company would sell me one of the retired jets for?
How smart am I. Went to get the car off the trailer. Got the trailer set up where I wanted and dewinched the car until the back wheels were off the ramps. Then I pulled the truck forward and the car unloaded itself. Perfect.
I always say I like the hot weather, but as I approach middle age it slows me down some. Yesterday I said I'd be happy moving two cars, well one car took me two days. Eh, I'm in no hurry. I am going to work on the winch tomorrow, because I'm not doing the come along thing anymore.
Well, let's see what my Mom has been up to this week.

Mike - Speaking of flying clubs, not being one who always follows rules, stationed @ Norton AFB in the 70s I was a member of the on-base flying club. Formation flying was against bylaws/rules. So, this other Airman and myself switched to a UHF frequency and began some formation flying around Riverside, CA @ ~7500 AGL. Someone heard us on the UHF frequency and turned us in. We were both grounded from flying for one month.
Over the course of my Microsoft career I built many of my own servers/desktop PCs. After retirement I sold several of them. My current desktop PC cabinet (mid-Tower) ON/OFF switch developed erratic behavior ~one month ago. I pulled it apart and broke the minuscule wire. I was able to somehow successfully solder it back and it's been working. I ordered a new spiffy mid-Tower (ATX form facto) case which arrived today. So, I'll be pulling the guts out of my current desktop PC mid-Tower case and transferring everything over to my new desktop PC mid-Tower case this evening. Glad I bought some cookies at the store today (Black Walnut/Chocolate Chip).
Oh yeah, update on my 2003 Ford 250 6.0L diesel. Loss of pressurization resulting in a no start condition. It requires if I recall correctly, a minimum of 500 psi to start. The mechanic measured it at 150 psi. Diagnosis bad HPOP (High Pressure Oil Pump). They're not inexpensive and lots of labor hours. I think the mechanic was going to begin pulling it apart today. Normally, I'd perform this repair - it's a PITA, but it's not anything beyond my capabilities. I simply don't feel like dealing with it and that's my story.
Oh hot day today. I wonder how much different it is here than in Phoenix where it's over 100. I mean, once it gets so hot, who cares how much hotter it gets. Of course, I've never been to Phoenix in the middle of summer.
Norm is your mancave/garage air conditioned? Do you ride at all when it's this hot or drive with the top down? So, tonight you are going to eat cookies while working on cookies. Hehe clever.
Didn't have a lot of luck with the winch today. The plate on the trailer had holes predrilled that matched the winch perfectly. But the winch itself is designed to go on the bumper of a vehicle. The leads going from the winch to the battery would need to be about 6 feet long to reach when the deck is tilted all the way up. That's too long to stow nicely when the deck comes down. Not quite sure what to do about that yet.
Along with all that I couldn't get the trailer to tilt at all. The battery is completely dead. I hooked up the truck and let it idle about a half hour, nothing. I may just take it for a ride tomorrow for a few miles to see if it will charge. I foresee a big problem with this battery by not using the trailer very often.
Well I have over an hour of daylight so I think I'll do a little mowing. I need to do a lot of mowing. Hope everyone has a good week.
Well, this new mid-Tower Corsair desktop PC case is decent enough. I managed to hook everything up correctly the first time. It came w/ x3 nice fans and they are super quiet. Nice airflow through the case. That gives me x6 fans inside the case: x2 front input fans drawing air in, x1 exhaust fan, x1 GPU fan, x1 CPU fan & x1 PS fan. It has glass sides - I guess the gamers like to see the little RGB lights on the motherboard. They're not obtrusive but I could live w/o them. It also has x2 USB 3.1 ports on the front which is nice. Including the x4 USB 3.1 ports on the back (integrated on the MOBO) this provides me w/ x6 USB 3.1 ports. The case is ~1.5" taller than my previous case & doesn't fit into the current shelving configuration so I'll need to drop one shelf a couple inches to accommodate the new case.

Mike - No, my man-cave is not air conditioned. The building is 30'W x 40'L x 14.7' H = 1200 sq. ft (18,000 cubic feet). I had a very nice AC and blower unit I considered for a long time installing into the man-cave. The man-cave is not insulated. The type of insulation required for any of these types of buildings provides a serious containment area for mold growth between the insulation and the sheet metal panels. Not to mention running AC in the building would cost a fortune. With the two front Overhead doors, two side doors and four screened windows it gets a fair breeze but only if there is in fact a breeze. I'm considering installing a large (industrial type) fan at the rear of the building to draw air from the inside>out. Something on the order of about 4' x 4' boxed blade fan. I'll get around to it but I have several other projects going at the moment.
It's been too bloody hot and humid to ride the motorcycle lately. The heat has been stupid the past two weeks. Since I'm right along the coastline, at this time of year we develop fast pop-up showers. It's that temperature inversion thing (mostly early mornings and early evenings) where there's a greater differential between the water temperature and the land temperature. I have the top up on the Cutlass at the moment and since the truck is in the shop, I'm driving the CS daily but with the top up and the AC blasting.
Mike,
one of my dogs has a lot of itching issues and we got Apoquil from the vet and that works wonders.
As for the Phoenix heat, up to 105 or so is tolerable due to the low humidity, 110 is rough, then above 115 is brutal. And remember there’s no cloud cover so full strength beaming sun that’s like a broiler in addition to the suffocating heat. Touching anything metal can burn you, and things exposed to the sun can brand you.
We have an average of 110 days at or above 100ºF and an average of 19 days at or above 110ºF. Back in 2011 we had a record of 33 days of 110+ temperatures. That summer really sucked.
Not as hot today but still sunny. It's been wonderful this weekend and I appreciate it. I'd have hated to have time off and then rain.
Went to the vet today, Tiger's scratching was unbearable for the both of us. The Dr. did indeed prescribe Apoquel and I expect great things from it. Even though I've been boycotting Awful house I said if he was a good boy we'd go get a dog burger. Well surprise of surprises, we were eating in today. And in a cruel twist of fate, their sign said no carry out orders. They ran out of the stuff. So I went in and had a good chat with Bob and Billy and had lunch as well, then Tiger got his burger. He was sitting in the car with the AC going while he waited.
Norm at work in the hangar and the tool rooms and such they have swamp coolers. Water runs down over grate and a fan behind the grate blows through the water. I guess that's a good description. Works pretty good. In the big hangar a few years ago they installed Big *** Fans. Even though they are 40 feet in the air they kick up a good breeze.
I'm gonna take the trailer for a ride this afternoon and see if I can get the battery to charge up a little. I think for now I'll attach the winch to the battery with jumper cables after I run the deck up. Not an eloquent solution but PBA for now.
Mike - I’m very familiar with swamp coolers. They perform very well for intended applications. Had one in my house near Riverside, CA. I’ve seen some of the large industrial types you’re referring to as well. It would make for a great application for the man-cave. I’ve thought about it. I might give it more consideration.
Keep in mind that the efficiency of evaporative coolers is inversely proportional to the humidity, so their effectiveness drops off as the humidity increases. They work great when the humidity is low but at around 50% humidity it's time to switch over to a refrigeration unit.
.
Geez I'm surprised they work at all around here. Georgia humidity is rather high most of the year.
Jamesbo must have found a willing participant to hanging those trusses on his Lake-mahal.
I'd say within the hour of giving Tiger that medicine his scratching all but stopped. He scratches and bites a little here and there, but it's about 95% less than this morning. Thanks Kenneth. If the vet wouldn't have said that's what he wanted to give him I would have asked about the Apoquel.
And now to start the wind-down. Ah, work. Two days this week, a guy could get spoiled with a schedule like that. Have a good evening everyone.
Glad to hear Tiger is doing better. Our vet also told us about Cytopoint and that on some dogs their symptoms go away completely after use. Unfortunately, our dog is not one of those and has had to go back after 4-5 months or so. It's an option to explore.
Curious how Apoquel worked I dug into it's mode of operation. APOQUEL (oclacitinib maleate) is a synthetic Janus Kinase (JAK) inhibitor. The JAK pathway was discovered ~27 yrs ago (2003). I left my tenure as an associate research scientist in 1998. I worked on a very similar inhibitor in blood platelet coagulation research (MAP Kinase). Both JAK & MAP pathways employ a tyrosine (amino acid) kinase inhibitor. So the JAK pathway was discovered ~5 yrs post my departure as a research scientist.
You know when you develop an immune response to many allergies you begin to sneeze, watery eyes, mucus in the lungs, nasal/sinus drip, etc.? That response is the release of cytokines (via your immune system) attempting to flush the foreign body (allergen) from your system. There are a number of new developments regarding the effectiveness of JAK inhibitors; however, Apoquel (oclacitinib maleate) in the treatment of dogs itching, etc. stops the production of cytokine release via the immune system. The allergic response in a dog is caused by the production of cytokines. JAK (the kinase itself) is always present in cells to produce cytokines. JAK (kinase) phosphorylates the transfer of a phosphate group from ATP to produce the cytokines via the presence of a tyrosine (amino acid) in JAK kinase. JAK kinase contains a tyrosine amino acid. Therefore, the JAK inhibitor operates by blocking the production of tyrosine required for the transfer of the phosphate group required to produce cytokines. It does so by inhibiting the production of tyrosine (amino acid) in JAK kinase.
No JAK = No Cytokine Production = No Allergic Response

Cytopoint is a anti-IL-31 monoclonal antibody injection which interrupts the IL-31 pathway. IL-31 is Interleukin-31. IL-31 resides on the outside of the cell - on the cell surface. In the previous example of Apoquel, JAK resides inside the cell & Apoquel inhibits the production of cytokines by inhibiting the JAK kinase (blocking the tyrosine amino acid) which stops cytokine production.
IL-31 is a marker/receptor on the cell surface. IL-31 produces cytokines. Restricting this conversation to dogs, this means when Cytopoint (an anti-IL-31 ab [antibody]) is injected into a dog, the monoclonal antibody binds/blocks IL-31 receptors on the cell surface effectively reducing the production of cytokines by blocking the IL-31 receptor.

First day back was okay. We did 100 wheels by 130. Sat around till 230. That messes with me more than anything. Tried not to nap at my desk but then got home and fell asleep when I sat down on the couch.
My delight in Apoquel is fading. I gave Tiger his first dose at a quarter to two yesterday afternoon and it went to work right away. He's supposed to get it every 12 hours. By bedtime(8pm) it had worn off and he was back to scratching. I thought once he got to sleep he'd be okay. Nope. Miserable night. Gave him medicine at 4am when I got up. He was okay when I left at 5 but was scratching when I got home this afternoon at 3. Gave it to him then, and if he needs it during the night I'll give it to him. I'm gonna ask the vet if I can give him a lesser amount, but more often.
The best medicine I ever gave my dogs was Comfortis. When I had my other dogs they got fleas and we couldn't shake them. The vet gave us Comfortis and I gave it to them in the evening, and I swear, in about 10 minutes the fleas were jumping off the dogs. Literally bailing off. And of course a little 20 Mule Team Borax in the carpet and that was it for the fleas.
Jamesbo I was just missing you is all.
Anybody have heartburn over getting General tires? I had mentioned on the Mercedes forum that I was going to get General Altimax's for my car and this guy pipes up and says absolutely don't do it! He bought Generals for a $hitty japanese car and it rode worse. I was thinking his problem was with his choice in cars, not tires. There's only a few companies that make a tire in the size I need, and the Generals seem like a good choice. Who knows.
I think I'll hit the sack early tonight. Hopefully we'll sleep good and I won't sleep all afternoon when I get home at noon tomorrow. Hope everyone has a good evening.
Mike - Sometimes: (1) The prescription was written incorrectly (sometimes the Vet doesn't even write the script - it may have been an assistant); (2) The wrong script was written (these scripts are often on a laptop nowadays); or, (3) Sometimes the drug store made an error filling the prescription. Just thought I'd mention it. You should check your container and the Apoquel product information sheet and make sure the prescription is for the correct dosage. I reviewed the dosage chart - ensure it matches up with you expectations for the correct mg tablets and dog body weight. Here's the dosage chart.
Finished up before 11 and left at 12. We haven't seen our lead in two days, at least, although he is at work. Word was he was listening to a call-in meeting and wanted to talk to us afterward, that's why we were waiting. Until the lead for the brake side said what are you doing here go home! Eh, done with that place for a while.
Norm my dog falls right in line with the data sheet. He's 93 pounds. I don't get this medicine. At first it does great, then it doesn't. I gave him medicine yesterday at 3pm and it was still going strong at 4am. I come home at noon and he's scratching so I gave him medicine. I'm still calling the vet and seeing what's up.
I just learned that Wix filters, who everyone loves and adores, has been sold to Mann. Mann also owns Purolator. This is bad news for the Corvair people because Wix was the go to brand for oil filters, and now people are seeing that the quality is lacking. We have precious few to choose from anyway. What does this mean for Oldsmobile? That cost cutting and application merging will leave us with less than adequate choices for filters. When I bought my convertible several years ago, there was a Purolator filter in the trunk, it was dinky. Well, it is the current replacement for the PF24, which is not dinky.
Beautiful out and hot. I'm going to take the car to get registered then coming home to mow. I've heard rain mentioned but don't know when or if it will materialize. I vote for it not raining. If I were king, rain would need a permit. Heh, guess who would be handing out rain permits...
Mike- My point was not the size of your dog. My point was to ensure the ‘prescription’ as stated on the bottle is correct for your dog. Was the prescription correct and filled correctly?
Mike, I got sum meds for Red, and Mosby [ the grey ghost cat\ ] one time. Mosby started shaking lie he had the DT's. Turned out the bimbo had put the dog meds on the cat labels and vis versa. Like to killed him but I got him back to the vet in time
Yep everything is on the up and up. I think the medicine is borderline incompatible with Tiger's system. That happens sometimes. I tried talking to the Dr. today but the place was too busy. So I'll make sure I talk with him tomorrow.
Went to get the car registered and Hagerty hadn't sent the information. They said two days tops and I talked with them Monday. Tried to get the email they sent to open on the phone and it wants a password. I don't have a password. The woman says, do you want to step outside and see if they will fax it to you? Does it look I have a fax machine in my pocket? Good news, my sales tax that Georgia makes you pay on private sales, is one dollar.
Beautiful evening. Just got back from the Awful house.
Overcast and coolish, probably around 80. Just sitting here with my grilled cheese sandwich. Anyone know why I'm eating a grilled cheese sandwich? Because Awful house is back to to go only orders. So Tiger got his burger and I got to come home and make a grilled cheese. I never did like the Awful house management but thought they were on their toes. Now I don't think that. They were short-staffed so they just decided to not do dine in. I said, start calling people. I guess they can't be bothered. The only reason I went in today was because I wanted to ask the chef to come over after work and help me.
Dan the filter part of the Purolator I'm certain is excellent, as always. What they did with the Corvair filter is eliminate the large rubber gasket that is pressed inside the rim, and install a thin plastic piece, like a cap, around the edge. That keeps the filter from tightening and the oil bypasses the smaller gasket in the middle and the oil doesn't get filtered. Also, if you tighten it enough for it not to leak, the plastic cap gets cut and it leaks. The Wix filters I was talking about before someone got one and the threaded hole in the middle was distorted and it couldn't be installed at all. Hopefully an isolated incident.
So, said friend is coming over to help me with the car later, so I'll get something done before that. I keep thinking it's Saturday. Have a good day everyone.
Hmm, the Purolator One filters that I have used for years, still have he rubber gasket. They have always been well rated. Maybe the application? But I don't know why they would have different quality for different vehicles, if that's the case.
Right what I was saying about the Corvair filter was that they took out the gasket and put on that cap. I know they didn't do that to every application. But the point was that when the bean counters start in saving pennies nothing is going to be safe.
I couldn't tell you Norm what the quality is of the current filters. I haven't used a Purolator filter for a Corvair since they changed that gasket. In fact I don't think I've used a Wix filter in years. It's possible they all suck and the oil circulating isn't getting filtered at all, who knows.
All I was saying was be diligent when buying oil filters and don't rely on past reputation. To quote Jamesbo, they took over and didn't even change the wallpaper.
Got the top off the car. Figured out how to raise and lower the soft top. It's been down in the well for awhile, and the maintenance manual says to wet the fabric and the edges will uncurl.
Red letter day today. Sunny not too hot. Fare for the day is to go get more brake line and turn it into scrap.
Jamesbo that's a lot of taters. Did you have to dig them before it got too hot for you to be outside, or before they baked in the ground?
Norm anything that says Barracuda on it has to be good. By the way, if anyone has a wrecked 67-69 Barracuda convertible for cheep I'd be interested.
One thing I need to do today is get a bunch of metric tools together. A guy I ran across on the Mercedes forum is coming over tomorrow and we're going to check over the car and see what it needs. He doesn't have a car but is looking for one so he says he wants to get some experience with one. Okay.
Got the inside scoop that Awful house was going to be carry out only today, so we didn't even go. I had some frozen waffles that I heated up and then wished I hadn't. Hm. I could rephrase that and say I had some frozen awfuls. That's more accurate.
Okay time to do something. Have a great day everyone.
Kenneth, Last time I was in your state, the rental car company gave we a black Caddy with 5 foot dash under the front windshield. When ya stopped to get a burger, It heated up fast
Good Monday at work. Really ended up good. We kicked *** all day long and I passed my previous record of 53 wheels signed by making 56. It's the little things... We finished up around 130 and the lead came and called us all outside to have a meeting. Not sure what that was all about, but he said we have a huge number of wheels backed up and he said we're working 8 hours Thursday(instead of 6) and he has authorization for 22 people to work 8 on Friday. Heck ya I said I'd do it! We asked if it was a normal thing, he said one week at a time. Well, it's a start to getting back to normal. Don't know where all these wheels are coming from, since our flights are still down about 75%. But tires do wear more in the summer.
So I'm currently holding on Hagerty's phone to see if they sent my info to the State so I can go get my car registered. It's a big pain going there and waiting in line just for the person to say, oh you don't have insurance. Uh, ya I do. I haven't gotten anything in the mail and I can't get into the email on my phone. So I wait.
Hot out. Kenneth one of these days I'm gonna go out there and experience 110* temps. You'd probably be in a sweat shirt here, it's -only- 90.
Okay gonna get something to drink. They're three minutes past their estimate. Have a good afternoon everyone.
Supposed to be over 110 for the next 10 days or so.
Thankfully you have the largest nuclear power plant (Palo Verde Generating Station) in the U.S.A. Three (independent) reactors each producing 1.4 GW for a total of ~3.3 GW @ 70%-90% capacity. Wasn't this station the largest in the world for many years? And, the quirky piece of this station is it is the only nuclear power station in the world (I think) which doesn't use naturally occurring water from a lake or river. I think this station is along the Gila River (which is a dry river basin?). It uses treated waste water I believe the article states. I remember when this behemoth was being developed and built (20 years to build). Truly a 21st Century marvel no doubt.
