Growling power steering pump.

Yes, the fluid level is correct. Rebuilt factory pump, new hoses, G body 442 fast ratio steering gearbox, no leaks, power steering works perfect, just growls like it’s low on fluid. Any ideas? Thanks

BTW, this is on my 69 Cutlass.

Is the steering hard or soft? Did you get the air out of the system? Are the hoses routed in a tight turn to limit fluid flow?

I can't speak on the norm but The one I had rebuilt by Power Steering Services did that for the first 50 to 100 miles. It slowly got quieter and quieter and worked perfect the entire time with no leaks.

I did the G body gearbox conversion years ago. The car drive perfect, the steering doesn’t have the “powerful” steering the factory gearbox had. It only grows at low speed tight turns (like pulling into a parking spot) but it’s kind of embarrassing. It growls like it’s low on fluid, it’s to the proper level (I even overfilled it to see if that would help) with no change.

How's the belt tension on the pump?

The tension is good, new belts and no slippage. The steering isn’t jerky like it would be if the belt was slipping. The pump just growls like it’s low on fluid.

I did the rebuild years ago, there was no wear and reassembly went fine. The pump worked fine for years, worked just fine for the G body gearbox conversion, the growl is something I noticed last fall. I’d like to fix it, it’s a little embarrassing. I’m leaning towards pump issues, but I don’t have another one to try.
