Non oldsmobile disk brake issue

Thought I would ask here because I've never had this happen or even heard of it happening. The other day I swapped my snow tires and wheels for my summer tires, this is on the Miata. As one would do I checked my brake pads and low and behold the passenger side rear was missing the pad, backing plate was there and attached as it should. I've never seen a pad that delaminated and left the area, I felt no lack of breaking power, rubbing of metal on metal squeaking and the rotor had a little rust dusting so this has happened a while ago, This was on pads and rotors that were onlt about 6 months old.

Now I don't run a lot of disk brakes so I'm a little ignorant but I haven't ever heard of this happening. Anyone heard or had this happen?.... Tedd

The closest I had was back in the 80s on my 70 Cutlass where the left front caliper apparently had seized, which caused the right front pad to handle the braking and wear completely through the lining and into the backing plate on both pads. One time I heard a slight noise while stopping which alerted me to check the brakes; I found the pad material missing and rotor deeply grooved from the rivets. This all happened with no metal-on-metal screeching, grinding, etc.

So yeah, I guess it happens sometimes.

That has always been a problem with bonded brake pads and shoes. I had a brake shoe separate a few years back, other than a rather heavy thunk, no other noises. I'd first check for a leak and if everything is ok, throw a new set of pads on the rears and move on.

Never had that happen before!

I have worn brake pads through to the rivets and gouged the rotors before. On my first car, a 1975 Chevy Caprice.

I have unfortunately had bonded shoes come loose from the backing plate before. It does happen. This is why I stick with Raybestos or Wagner parts only.

It's rare but not unknown. Where did the pads come from?, were they cheap generic aftermarket or a reputable brand?. I have heard of a few horror stories in the UK with Chinese fake stuff.

I don't know the make of the pads as I was more interested in the rotors and it came as a kit but I suspect Chinaisem parts were involved. I don't think anything is damaged and I have another set of pads if they are for the rears, can't remember so I'm good to go, thanks for the info.... Tedd

I would not worry about the scored rotors, the pads will mold into the scores. Before buttoning everything up make sure the calipers are working correctly.

The rotors look very good, I don't think there was metal on metal or this just happened and I lucked out. Now to get the time to pop off the wheel and slip in a new pad.... Tedd

I'll be driving older cars for the rest of my time here. I like them better anyway. Right now I have a 99, an 04, and an 06. I do all the service unless it's something that's over my head which doesn't happen unless it's electrical. I hate electrical and it hates me.

I had a problem with the calipers not sliding as they should to have both pad sides work during and the inside pad was burned down to the metal. Surprised you didn;t hear any metal rubbing if both sides of the caliper pads were working.. I'd check your caliper pins for sliding and boots are good.. and use silicon grease like Sil-glide not a joint type grease.

Check the date of Tedd’s post. He likely has it resolved by now.
