Clinching brakes

I was hoping someone could explain this procedure in layman's terms...haha. I changed my front brake pads recently on the CC and they have been squealing terrible ever since. The manual I used didn't mention clinching the brakes but after getting my GM manual, it lists it as the final step (I didn't do it). I see the diagram on how to do it...but I just want to make sure I do it right. Is it only done on the outboard pad? Only on one side of the pad or both?

Thank you!

The outer pad on the single piston calipers has a set of ears that fit over the caliper casting. You are supposed to squeeze these ears down so that the pad is tight in the caliper. I've never been able to successfully do this the way the CSM shows. I guess I just have a weak grip. Instead, I bend the ears prior to installing the pad in the caliper, using a hammer. I try to do this a little at a time, test fitting until the pad just pushes into the caliper with a light press.

Note that 1) metallic pads will squeak, and 2) you should also use anti-squeak compound on the backside of the pads before you put them in the caliper.

Ah cool...ok, yeah that makes sense. I bought cheap pads so I guess it's to be expected. I'll try to clinch them and put some compound on the back as well. I am doing my tie rods tomorrow so I figured while I had the wheel off...I'd try to stop or at least minimize the squealing.

Thank you for your help!
