It's been a long time coming...

After about a year and a half of noticing the "rust bubbles" under the vinyl top on my '72 U code Supreme, I was finally able to find a shop that wasn't booked up with other projects.

I dropped it off this past Monday, and stopped by today to check the progress. I must admit that the damage is way less than I expected. He's going to take care of the pits, then rust-proof it, and then lay down some epoxy before he installs the new top. If everything goes according to plan, I should have it back around the end of next week.

Here's some pics of when I first saw the issue, and what it looked like once he stripped the top.

Oh, and a side note...the last time the top was replaced was almost 30 years ago by a former owner, so all things considered, it's held up pretty well.

Good move to take care of it before it got worse. That area between the rear window and the deck lid is notorious for rusting out. That’s what killed my 70 Supreme (my first car). Once it rusted through there, the water getting into the trunk rusted out the lower quarter panels and trunk floor. I repaired it during a paint job in the late 80s but it rusted out again and eventually led to the demise of the car I thought I’d drive forever.

That shop must do some work on old cars.
I see an early fifties Packard and a late forties Plymouth parked there.

Glad you're getting the work done before any major damage. Love that car Dave!

New top looks exceptionally nice. I know you are glad to have all the bubbles behind you.

Happy Motoring!
