I want to put a new top on my 70 cutlass s the apolisster whats to do it before I paint the car but I feell I should have it done after the paint job what do u guys think?

 

I personally would wait until its painted. I plan to paint my car, top and all same color as if i were not putting a vinyl top on. But I will put the vinyl on after its painted. More paint more protection IMO. Just be sure the paint has had time to harden sufficiently before they put it on.

When the computer puts a little red dotted line under a word, that means that it can't find that word in the dictionary. If you "right-click" on it (control-click for Mac users), it will tell you the correct spelling... Unless you got really creative, anyway.

I'm not self-taught. I was taught by a bunch of mean old ladies in grammar school, well before high school.
They taught me that if I can't spell something, I need to look it up in the dictionary.

Did you ask the upholsterer why he wanted to do it before paint, or what he thought the roof would need to provide proper protection against rusting?

 

I think he wouldn't have to worry about any scratchs. The roof is in very good shape under the vinyl. I took it off to repair a small dent.Plus it was worn out.

 

Paint the whole car. Get the roof sealed well. When the vinyl roof goes on, they will lightly scuff the paint surface to get adhesion. The scuffing will not affect the sealing aspect the paint creates.

I'm guessing the upholstery shop just doesn't want to be responsible for any scratches that may occur when they put on the new vinyl roof. If that's the case, go to a different shop that has higher installation standards and more careful workers.

 

Imho, it doesn't matter when the top goes on as thy can mask it off. Just make sure the roof is prepped so you wont get any rust under the top.

Paint under a vinyl top is a must. Why do you think the factory did it? It prevents rust which inevitably plagues vinyl topped cars. Moisture is trapped by the vinyl. If its trapped under a top that's only primed or worse, bare metal, your asking for rot through.
