Well, it's not called "resale red" for nothing. I guess it comes down to what you plan on doing with the car. Are you rebuilding it only to keep it for a few years then sell it? If so, keep it red. However, if you plan on keeping it for awhile, I think you should paint it whatever color you want. Guess it all depends if you're a "keep it original" type of guy. My 442 was red and I SERIOUSLY contemplated painting it another color for the very reason you state. I'm just not a red car fan. However, at the end, I decided to stick with it because it's a big job to get it back to original color, especially on a full restoration.
1) there's a deck lid on eBay. the guy, however, wants a ton of money for it and it's not in perfect shape. Check with www.dvap.com as well.
2) I have a front bench seat. It's located in Phoenix, AZ.
3) I also have a back seat, although I think the seat frame might be different for a 'vert. You'll have to check with the others on this.

I personally don't care for the 68 red which is Scarlet Red, I find it to dull no pop. I had been contemplating going back to the original red color as well. I am pretty sure I will go with another color or shade of red in the end.
Like it has been mentioned make it your own.

It's called resale red for good reason. It's also called write'em up red by the cops.
I searched for three years looking for a '68 GTO convertible that was red from the factory. Most of them were that dark Verdoro Green or some other color and had been repainted red. You really don't see all that many red '68-'72 era B.O.P. A bodies at the cruises?, lots of Chebelles.
I really like the Nordic Blue that my Vista was/will be again. It's a lighter shade with a slight metallic and looks good on all the A bodies IMO, it really looks good with woodgrain.

New Car Paint
I don't think a change in color, if the paint job is done right (flawlessly), would change its value. However, paint jobs are varied in detailed and need to be carefully considered to keep the value of your car peaked. I just got back from two paint & body shops today with a friend who wants to paint his 1970 VW Bug. One of the big Questions was do you want to paint it the same color or a different color? The answer was a different color. This increased the price of the job because of all the extra preparation, time and materials that go into the car, e.g., door jams, dash, door seals, under both hoods, etc.
The paint job alone - a higher end base color (non-metallic)polyurethane/layered clear coat paint job (no body work) will be about $3000.00. If a color change is chosen, it is $1000 more. Keep in mind that this is a higher end paint job. The other shop (even more higher end) quoted a $6000-7000 price range (I thought I would swallow my tongue on that quote for a VW Bug). Both shops stated that they dis-assemble the body before painting, and if rust is discovered, it must be repaired prior to painting; ergo, likely major surgery for any older car that has been in the rain, sleet and snow (which is the case with this VW)
You may not be going this far with your car, but thought you may be interested in my experience today. On my 57 Olds, I've been considering a color sand and buff/glaze which runs between $250-500 (whew) a big difference compared to the high end paint job my buddy is considering.
Good luck,
Dan

New paint shanging colors
Something just occurred to me I'd like to also pass along...when speaking to a paint/body shop owner yesterday, it was mentioned that when painting a car a different color, some "Purists" will see immediate car value depreciation in their heads for whatever their reasons - probably a case for keeping the car as original as possible, which may be a good debate among purists. They look for chips and scratches in the paint which may identify if a car's color has been changed (via the different color layers of the paint).
In my opinion, a car's beauty and flawlessness is the ticket, and if its color change and new paint job enhances that, then so be it!

resale
tough question...."resale red" is because it's a flashy color that appeals to muscle car enthusiasts. A red car is more of a head turner than some other colors. You might have more people interested in buying it later on than if it were brown or green originally. More demand drives up the price
But to some people originality is more important. Some would argue that matching numbers also applies to the trim tag.
I think the answer is...unless the body and paint is already in great condition, paint it whatever color you like....because a future owner later on may get body and paint work and change the color again.
