C heads on a 73 455?
C heads on a 73 455?
I have a stock 73' 455 with the J heads on it.
A) can I put 67' C heads on it?
B) Is it worth it? ( already have the C heads)
C) can I use the same pushrods?
Planning on sending the heads to the machine shop for refurbishing/valve job, etc
Thanks in advance for any thoughts/advise

Answer to #1 = YES
Answer to #2 = I say yes. I would have .020 to .025 milled off.
Maybe even .030 off the help improve compression.
Big valve or small valve, on the street you Would never see or feel the difference! Bragging rights only with big valves.
For sure check push rod length. If you can convert to adjustable rocker arms, better yet.
If you can improve on you cam, even better.

Not sure but i got the impression that the c heads were going to be reworked at a machine shop. That is if he got a answer that the change would help his engine.
They are the big valves. The 455 does have a larger cam. Don't know the numbers as the previous owner lost the card...

400 or 455 dilemma
Well,
I have this 67'442 4spd post with 46k original miles on it. It was raced in the past and has had a 73 455 installed. That engine is said to have Mondello rods, JCX heads, J's turned into C's with a little Xtra! They are stamped accordingly. (have a lot of "back breakers" at car shows trying to figure out what the hell that is!) It has a larger cam, but I don't have the card on it... I want to freshen it up or build the correct 400E block sitting in my garage...
I have all the correct pieces for the 400 on the 455 so it looks correct, except for the heads.
My dilemma,
A) spend less money to reseal the oil pan and rear main, put C heads on, and clean and paint engine and engine bay with the 455 or...
B) spend more money,( not readily available...) in building the correct 400...
I would need to buy/pay for on the 400,
A) Head refurbishing/valve job
B) new camshaft
C) Machine shop work, cylinder bore, pistons, crank turning etc...
D) correct flywheel
E) pistons
I am just about to pull the 455 and take it apart and see exactly what I have. I guess that will be my guiding light. It runs like a scolded cat!! but it's not correct...
Ultimately, I am looking at it as an investment and in the long run, a numbers matching, all original car trumps more horse power!
