I'm installing my mini starter

When in stalling the Mini Starter I keep hitting this "ear" piece off the side of the block just above the oil dip stick area, was wondering if I could shave this piece off and what is it's function, thanks for any help.

That's for the support / ground / torque strap for the OEM starter. See the assembly manual for an illustration. You don't neeeeeeeeeed it, no.

Rather than alter the block permanently, could you maybe clock the starter to a new orientation?

The starter is

olds 455 The starter is the Tuff stuff Performance 6586b, I have tried to clock the starter but there isn't any setting that will fit, unless I add like 1/2" spacer in between the mounting plate and the block. Thanks Octania.

Shiny... I'd do what Trip suggested after checking to make sure the mount isn't oil soaked.

olds 455 It's the tuff stuff 6586b which is suppose to be for the Buick Olds Pontiac cars. No matter how I adjust it the solenoid bumps against that ear piece. I see some on eBay for under $150 was wondering if I should just get a completely different one. I think they are called "Snap ez start" they seem to have a lot more adjustments versus the one I have. Just confused.

Well you can try any brand of mini starter you want but consider this! You have been advised on a brand that works with no issues. That brand is powermaster and while you may and i say may find a cheaper starter to work. Why not just get one that works and is proven not by one guy but two.I have three powermasters on three engines no fitting problem.Mine was a 9510 for a 455 a body. Enough said! You choose if you want to follow a path of trial and error till you find one that works.

I ran the Power master starter that looked exactly like that one on the Olds 350 in the now burnt Olds powered 4x4. Cleared fine and cost $127 listed for a SBC. Does the 455 have that boss only?

Neeley,
I just ordered a 9610 from Summit yesterday. It looks like it is recommended up to a 12.0:1 compression where as the 9510 is good up to 18.0:1. I have a 455 with 10.0:1 compression. I'm hoping there's no fitment issues.Any thoughts? Sorry Seal for sneaking in on your thread.
Thanks
Rick
