425 crank

Hey where do you guys think I can find a crank for a 1965 425. I know its a forged crank. An original crank would be great, but I am going to be worried about the condition of it is. I want to do this build right, but then again I dont want to spend a lot of money at the machine shop. Id rather save that money for the block and heads.

Even an aftermarket crank. Finding stuff for this motor is tough. If anybody could let me know that would be nice. Thanks for your help. You guys know everything!

is yours beyond repair? i don't think 425 cranks are that high priced but not sure. i have a 425 that is locked up sitting in a car but i have no idea when i could get it out. i'm sure someone here will have one that you could get faster than mine.

The 65 thru 67 425 and 400 cranks interchange. They should be plentiful. I have a standard one in NJ for 100 bucks if you are interested. SHipping would be expensive.

I dont have a crank for that motor. Id preferrably want an original crank to keep the motor original, but if not I will go aftermarket. Being a 1965 crank I think its going to be hard to find a good crank if I go original, but then again I never thought id find the block and heads.

Yeah Opel! I called them up the other day because I'm going to need to have the block hot tanked. Has he done work for you?

65-67 425/400 crank is about as good as they come. Forged steel. Just my opinion.

If you wait long enough one might just come around for the right price. Dont rush, just wait for the right deal.

If all you have is a block and heads, you can use a 455 crank and 455 pistons and rods in that block. A forged 425 crank will probably run you around 200 bucks plus shipping, so I'd take Oldsmaniac up on his offer if it's a nice clean crank.
If you decide to go the 455 route, I have a bunch of that stuff laying around.

I did the headwork for Opel back in the late '70's when John Bleasing started it - Ted was a kid, but learned from a great teacher. He's real good.
I've been sending work there ever since, with no complaints!
[he's probably not even aware of it!]

Thanks for the referral! I'm waiting a couple weeks to get everything hot tanked. I've heard a lot of great things about Opel from many people.

Oldsmaniac, Could you possibly post pictures? Thanks.

Only the 65-67 400. The 68,69 400 has a longer stroke (455 crank). The bore size got smaller in 68. Thats why an early 400 while rev more freely than a later model.

Someone serious would not ask for pictures in a forum but would deal privately thru Email. What do you expect to see in pictures of a crankshaft? Unless you were very good you would not be able to tell a SB crank from a 455 or a 425. By there way there are not aftermarket cranks available for an Oldsmobile per say. You also say you do not want to spend big $$ at a machine shop. Unless you have one in your basement there is no alternative unless you are building an engine just to go Boom....

Normally someone selling something would post pics of what they have for sale.

Eagle is making cranks with 4.25" stroke, and 4.500" stroke, for the bogblocks, but I would still rather have a factory crank,or go big & get a billet crank made.
ALL 65-67 400/425 cranks are forged. They tend to get scooped-up as people use them in diesel stroker builds and even certain 455 builds. It's usually the only thing that sells when someone is selling or parting a 425.

I have a 425 crank that I can grind and have ready to go for $250. I think shipping from Quincy, IL to you would be around $35. Let me know if you are interested.

Maybe, but I did not list the item in the sale section. Dont really want to sell the crank or it would be advertised, but figured I would offer it to help someone out at a great price and all the transaction details between us should be done in a private message or Email....

The crank was sold back in 2010 when this thread was active. You will have better luck checking craigslist.

I realize this thread is back from the dead, but once again, I'm mystified by the quote above. No matter what you do, it won't be the "original" crank.

As noted, any 1965-67 BBO crank will be identical to your original one. One should worry more about how worn the replacement crank is, how straight it is, and do you need it drilled for the MT pilot bearing or not.
