Oil Pan Gasket Question
Oil Pan Gasket Question
Quick question for the engine builders on here.
First: I know the gaskets get set in a certain order and the side pan gaskets get set on top or under the end gaskets?
Second: Do you put a small bead of RTV over the end seals? Just block to end seals, end seal to pan, or on both sides of the end seals?
I don't want this pan to leak!
Thanks,
Dan

You'll probably get more than one opinion on this question.
Here's what the Olds service manual says:
1. Apply sealer to both sides of pan gaskets and install on the block.
2. Install front and rear rubber seals.
3. Install oil pan. Torque 5/16" bolts to 15 ft-lbs and 1/4" bolts to 10 ft-lbs.
I would add that be sure that all sealing surfaces of the pan are without any distortions.

The little tabs on the side gaskets slide under the rubber seals.
The only place silicone is required is at the corners to close up the rubber and cork areas.
Beyond that is lots and lots of opinions. I'm a huge fan of spray tack. There's also the diesel gasket set that has a metal core for the side rails.
