I'm buying a 'B' 400 disassembled motor, mostly complete, I'm checking on what should be there. I've seen on an exploded view of a 455 an item called the Turkey Pan. It goes under the intake as the gasket? Under over the gaskets, I'm not sure never having had an Olds. big block apart before. It looks to me that it keeps hot oil off the intake. I've checked the service manual for 65 it says the 425 used a one piece Gasket it also shows an oil baffle again in a 425. What I'm getting is pictured. It looks as if it will bolt down where the 425 smaller baffle bolts in. Can some one enlighten me as to whats correct.

Thanks 65B01Delta, So it is purchased as a gasket for every assembly of the intake to block , correct?
What about the oil baffle shown on the 425, whats that all about?

Your picture doesn't show up, Olds Fan, but the original type intake gasket is a turkey tray, and is a single-use item, available from Fel-Pro and all the usual sources.
You can find debates on how essential the tray itself (as opposed to a pair of port gaskets) is to the correct operation of the engine, without looking too hard.
I ASSume that you posted a picture of the oil baffle, which is a stamped steel cover over the casting holes that look down on the camshaft, held on with two screws (¼/20, I believe), and is used on big blocks, but not on small blocks.

OK
I'll try the pic. again. Bill ( selling the engine ) identifies this as out of a 67 330 I'm interested in what should be in the 400 'B' The manual shows a small oil baffle in the 425,. If the "one piece gasket" was used in the 400 then shouldn't the oil baffle be there also. Does anyone know where to find a definitive parts breakdown for the 400'B'??
If you decide you want to buy one I have a new, unopened one I would sell you for $25 plus the shipping.
Email me if you are interested, dadphelps@yahoo.com

Sorry, no pic again.
The 330 is a smallblock, and has no oil baffle.
The 400 is a big block, and has the oil baffle.
Both used the turkey-tray type gasket originally (and should still if the engine is unmodified).

Eric, I'm the first one to admit when I'm talking out my rear, but even the '65 CSM shows the baffle being for 425 only.
If you have other information, of course, I'm very interested.

No, you are correct with the picture of that baffle. My 330 had one that bolted to the lifter galley and was a rectangular tray. It interfered with the use of the turkey tray and Olds had a different part number for a 4 piece steel shim gasket that did not have a turkey tray.
There are 2 intake gasket part numbers for the 330:
This is the standard turkey tray:

The one question I've always had since the HC 330's never used a tray, is why would anyone want to use the turkey tray? The 4 piece gasket set is so much easier to install. Mine never had any oil burn on issues or sludge build up.
Exhaust crossover was the way it was born. I don't think anyone was ever in this engine until I did a valve job on it due to a blown head gasket. I was impressed on how clean it was, cause I've worked on some that had piles of crud in them. Scheduled oil changes are a requirement with Olds engines.
