Why when i give it gas it feels like i have to push it through the floor pan to go

hello my name is Michael and i have a 1984 delta 88 two door with a 455ho, and i was wanting to get some info about something that has been happening lately. when i am driving the car and give it gas it feel like the pedel hesitates when i push on it, like there is something underthe pedel but there is nothing there. also when i am giving the car gas it feels like there is no power at all to the car when i give it gas if feels like it is out of gas and then it feels like all the gas is stuck and then its bursts into speed. this has only been happening maybe two weeks.
any help would be apricated

Michael, Welcome to our site. It sounds to me like your carburetor accelerator pump is not operating, what you described is called hestitation. With a 455 in your car (which is not stock) I can only assume that it is carburted, I have heard of a few, well maybe one, 455 that was converted to fuel injection. I would take at look at rebuilding your carburetor. Good luck.

I agree that it sounds like the accelerator pump and you should rebuild it.

Did you check

Don't forget to check your fuel filter. The carb is the most likely problem but there are a lot of other areas to look at. Does this older 455 engine have an EGR valve? And how’s the distributor, timing, vacuum advance etc. A lot of variables to consider. Just some thoughts.
