Ted, according to the 67 CSM the WG engines were High Compression 10.25:1
The Transmission should have an 67 - OH - 1001(start number) on a tag attached to the lower side of the trans.

Bill, the engine is a part. The guy started but never finished type of deal. The heads have been pressure tested cleaned(magna flux
Some parts are missing-the cam, driveshaft, and air cleaner amonst them
The air cleaner he gave me has a bar code on it and is black.

Allan, the tran is a 3 speed, and the shifter the car has indicates a two speed. Did the 330hc come with a 3 speed?
The bell housing also has a separation line visible.I thought that was most common on F--ds
I do not see a tag on the lower side of tran- actually I see no identifiable marks at all, except for the# on the tail.
Hey , think I can get a six pack on it?!

To clarify, all 1964-1972 SBO heads used about the same 60-64 cc chamber volume. CR was varied by changing the piston dish. It wasn't until the smog years that SBOs started using large combustion chambers.

Sounds exactly like a '67 330 HC.

Be aware that the 4-bbl versions had different length pushrods, presumably due to more cam lift which in turn required a smaller cam base circle. Moot point if you are rebuilding it to new with new parts.

WG head.

How much is the W G head worth? Trying to decide whether to rebuild 330 or drop another motor in - any input is appreciated

So, L69 are parts fairly inexpensive for these motors? The car is in decent shape. The old question, keep orig or pick up another motor????

sammy,

The only truly different part is the cam should be a 45cba vs 39 cba but cutlassfi can custom grind one for you with lifters for i believe $225. Parts vary, pistons are difficult to find, i have several nice sets stnd. also you can use 400e pistons 4" bore if you bore your motor out to 4" it make it a 340, I have done this several times. It all depends on what you are using it for. Yes a 350,400,425,455 will be better for power and bang for you buck but if your trying to keep the car original then thats the way to go, also if its all you have and are trying to just freshen the motor up on a budget then it will be fine. I have build several 330's since I mostly collect and work on 66's. They make plenty of power and using the 400 pistons bringing her up to a 340 most people will never know whether its a 330 or 350. 10ci difference will never be noticed on the street. If you have it, build it.

FYI if the heads are WG then it is a hi-comp motor so it comes with a pretty stout 320 HP. With a little head porting if you can do it, nice carb/intake and descent dual exhaust you could easily bring that up 20-30 HP

Those are 330 lo-comp pistons from what I can tell. Bore should be 3.938 must be measured with a mic. 400 Pistons will be flattops. I have a set if you are interested, brand new and you can have them for $140 plus shipping. Someone may have put 330 WG Hi-Comp heads on that motor.

Is that nick on the edge sharp (V-shaped) or dull (U-shaped)?
It's hard to tel from your photo.

The V-shaped ones are high-comp., the U-shaped ones are low-comp.

Here's a picture:

The front of the pistons should have a notch in the top. The shape of the notch is to denote the exact type of piston, per the Chassis Service Manual. Or, you can accurately measure the depth and diameter of the dish and calculate its cc displacement. Really, just the depth measurement is enough to discern LC from HC pistons.

Why not just grab those cheap flat top E-400 pistons and assemble a HC 340?

good pic mdchanic. forgot to pull out my manual. I cant tell if they are a v or c notch but the pistons looks pretty dished. Either way it cant be a 4" bore as that size was never made for a 330 in oversize piston. They came in 30,40,60 carried thorugh napa until the early 90's. If it is a 4" bore then it can only be a 400 piston and those are def not 400 pistons. Also piston does not show an oversize stamped number on them, most likely they are original bore pistons either lo/hi comp.

I just went into my garage where I have several sets of stock 330 lo comp pistons. The part number for these in 66 on standard bore is 381312. Also the c shape is very pronounced on the lo comp. You def have the hi-comp pistons and to confirm just check the part number inside the piston skirt if its not 381312 then they will be hi-comp. If you could get me that number also so I can update my parts number book. 20 years of documenting numbers and i never put the number down for 330 hi-comp. That motor with those heads and 400 pistons will be a mean little 340. Felpro head gaskets will keep the comp ratio low enough to run 91-93.

Estimating those heads with a 60-64 cc chamber and felpro .045 head gaskets with a .062 overbore your compression ratio will be anywhere from 9.5-10.1. This is assuming a stock deck height. Have cutlassfi grind you a cam to your liking and you will have a nice little ripper.
