65 400

Looking for a good cam for my 65 400 build. My machine shop says he can only find a factory cam, due to no cores available for a custom grind. Any ideas?

Your 65 400 will be a 45 degree cam and there are numerous cam grinders that can grind any option you want or need. Get a machine shop that is willing to do a little research.

If you have done any research lately, you would know that cam cores for grinding are scarce, so, instead of telling me to find a machine shop that will do research, assuming they haven’t, how about you just say, hey, so and so will do it.

If it’s a large lifter 400, and it’s most likely a 39° Block. And yes most people are out of Cores today.

I may be confused, but the OP says he has a '65 400ci, which by all the info I know of would have the 45° lifter bank angle, and the smaller .842 lifter bore.

You’re right. They changed in 66 correct?

Correct. The '66 and '67 400's had the 39° lifter bank angle, .921 lifter bore, and bigger valves in the "C" heads. The 400ci motors in the 442's changed again in '68. The '68 and '69 400ci's were made from the same raw block as 455's. These 400's had a smaller bore and longer stroke than the '66's and '67's to achieve the same displacement. They still had the 39° lifter bank angle, but went back to the smaller .842 lifter bore.

The 68-69 were a SIMILAR raw block vs the 455, not the SAME raw block. If they were the same then you’d be able to bore a 400G to 4.125, and you can’t.
Just an fyi.

Mark - You are correct! I misinterpreted the meaning of "type" found in the attached chart that Joe P. posted. I thought when the chart said '68 and '69 400's were derived from a 455 "type" block, that it meant "the same as". Thanks for the correction.

The internet always amazes me with what can be found with a little research.
