What's the correct water pump for a 69 455

Of course I get the car all together and replaced the radiator and thermostat and almost replaced the water pump while I had it all apart said to myself, "I am sure it's fine".

Nope it's not alright, have to change it, it's starting to leak.

Anyway, I have a 69 block but looking at the water pump that's on it, it's reading it has a casting number of "412285" which I think is for either a later model 403 or 455.

Can anyone direct to the correct replacement? 1969 455 with no a/c. I don't need a date correct one or anything just the right one to order for my car.

Thanks,

Drew

You can see from the 1972 edition of the parts catalogue group 1.069 that there were only two pumps available for the 1968 - 1970 V8 F85: part 230899 w/o AC or HD cooling, and 230900 with AC or HD cooling. I imagine these translate into part numbers 404655 and 404846, taken from the 1970 Assembly Manual, section 6-1 page 86.

Thank you.

I am thinking this might work if Summit is correct.

How about this....what car is it going into and what pulleys do you have for it? That will determine what you need to get more than anything.

Thanks Randy, I did a little thread research here on the forum and found that out.

Measured what I have on there now and I believe that I found one that will work.

Thanks again!

The "correct" part/casting number for a water pump on a '69 455 with A/C or heavy duty cooling is 400269. Without A/C or heavy duty cooling, the casting number is 398681.

Here is a related thread:
https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...p-lengths.html
On this thread is a link to oldsmobility which gives a chart of pumps with part numbers and casting numbers. It lists the length, part number and casting number for 68-70 455cid as:

with A.C., 5.57 inches part # 230337 casting # 400296
w/o A.C., 5.07 inches part # 388182 casting #384783

This differs from rcorrigan5 post above.
Aslo I have been told recently that the correct casting for 68-70 442 with AC option is 404847 X. So now I am totally confused.

I do not have access to my car at the moment. Can anyone who has original equipement take a look at their pumps and let us know what the casting numbers are for 68-70, 455 cid with and without AC.

Thanks, Peter

I'm pretty sure the numbers Peter posted are replacement GM water pumps - same dimensions as for the pump numbers I posted but newer versions of the same water pumps.

My '69 4-4-2 (with the 400 engine) with A/C has its original water pump -400269 - which is also the same pump listed in the assembly manual.

In my book "4-4-2 By The Numbers" it lists the pumps I cited as the original part numbers for the 400 and 455 engines in model years 1968 and 1969.

I'm not 100% certain that I'm right - just going by what my book and assembly manuals for '68 and '69 say.

The bad part about some of these water pumps - 400269 in particular - is that the numbers aren't always clear on them. If you had different people look at an original 400269 water pump and then tell you the casting number, you will get 4 different answers: 400268, 400269, 400288 and 400289 - the numbers just aren't that clear in the casting. The assembly manual clears up that particular problem, though.

It is also possible that some of the documenation that has been generated over the years (not the original factory stuff) contains errors. For example, the casting number 400269 (on Randy's pump), is very similar to 400296 (on the pump chart on the oldsmobility site).
Isn't this fun!

Got it, and the size is perfect!

Thanks for the assistance and info!

As discussed in the other thread, same pump that Summit sells for $60.
