That's a D-block 425. If it was born in that Toro then it has high compression and big valve B heads. Not a bad choice for a Cutlass.

You could always get rid of your Cutlass and buy the Toronado. They are definitely COOL!

I don't think the transmission will work. Toronados were front wheel drive so that is actually a transaxle.

Factory rating was 385 HP and 480 ft-lb, but don't put a lot of stock in those numbers.

hey joe when you say don't put a lot of stock in the numbers ??were the numbers low or high, I have a chance to pick up the same motor(389244D) out of a 66 98 and wonder if its worth it? any input is greatly appreciated

The hp rating would be high by todays standards. Today all hp ratings are net with all accessories, factory exhaust, etc. When the ratings where done for 1966 it was on a dyno stand with open exhaust and no accessories. This is a simplified explaination and has been discussed many times in the fourms. Hit search and you will find lots of detail

Any 425 is worth getting, but the reason I don't put a lot of faith in the stock HP numbers is that they were biased in both directions. As noted above, early (pre-1971) motors were rated at gross HP, without stock air cleaner, manifolds, or accessories. That would normally make the ratings higher than the as-installed delivered HP. I say normally because there were some funny things going on with the highest HP engines. As an example, the 1970 W-30, with different heads, more radical cam, and O.A.I., was only rated at 5 HP more than the normal 455 (and significantly less than the Toronado 455, with a much milder cam!). A suspicious person might think that the 370 HP rating was more a function of GM's 10 lbs per HP limit (370 HP max in a 3700 lb car) than a real dyno rating.

Althow I did not do the engine build, the previous owner informed me it was stock with a W-30 cam or rated the same. I don't race the car but the HP is plenty for me. I have a buddy that has a dyno and hope to get it on next spring.

You may want to remove the intake before ording any parts. Mine is a 38 degree CBA.

Nothing that a sawzall can't fix.
Do you think anyone here, who has photo shop could give us a preview of one?

Yes, but they were not factory built, they were aftermarket conversions (ASC or Cars and Concepts, if I recall).

Hi AZ442, think you mean 39 degree CBA!
All toro did have that 39 degree CBA big lifter engine , all other 45 degree CBA small lifter engine for that year.

That looks better than what the factory put out.

The 39 degree 425 is a keeper.
Great engine.

the 455 only came with 39° like every other olds engine build from '68 and up.
