68 olds 455 piston rings

About how long would it take to replace the piston rings in a 68 455? And could I leave the engine in while I do it or do I have to take it out? It would be my first time doing something like this but I have a friend who has done it plenty of times that is willing to help though.

You would have take the whole engine apart. If needs rings than it's going to need a rebuild. So I would be ready to send some money. As far as how long. Pulling the engine if it's in the car 2-4 hours. Taking the whole engine apart 1-2 hours. Having the machine work done 1-2 weeks. Putting the engine back to gather 5-8 hours.

If you are planning on doing the rings, do the whole thing. You are going to have to pull the motor to get the pistons out to get to the rings. I know it's an expense, but you'll kick yourself for not doing everything from the heads down at least. Things from the heads up can be fixed with the motor in if you just can't do a complete build now.

Pulling engine: 2-4 hours, engine tare-down: 1-2 hours bolting engine back together: 5-8 hours WOW! That's being quite optomistic. Just had to say something about the blasting-fast wrench turning, especially done in the garage/at the house. Not saying that it's impossible. I'll say that the machine shop time is realistic.

He just wanted a basic time idea. For a stock rebuild it's about right. For someone's first time you can double the time. For a built engine with a lot of extra details. I have spent 16 hours on building one. Yes I'm know for fast wrenching, but I do loose track of time pretty easy when working on cars.

it takes me a little longer then the times stated. I'm old and take more breaks. 4-6 hours engine out. 2 hours dis-assemble. 2-hours clean greasy mess off engine. Re-assemble after machine work 6-8 hours. Re-install 5-8 hours. Tired just thinking about it, time to take a break

Scraping all the crap out of all the ring lands takes forever.
I'd dedicate 2 hrs and 2 beers to that.
