What Cam to use

Hello,

I'm new to the forum and have been out of the car game for 10+ years. I am getting ready to freshen up one of my older restorations and wanted to know what cam people are using for a mostly stock restoration of a 1971 W-30 455 w/at, a/c and pb.

Thanks,

Welcome to CO. Some one will chime in with a suggestion. There are a couple of cam specialists on the site.

Nice looking ride

Something about Comp Cams just rubs me the wrong way (Kinda like Wal-mart for cam shafts), not sure why. They do have quite a selection however.

I guess not too long ago Ultradyne was quite popular in Olds engines. I think its shutdown now, but I heard from the rumor mill that the guy who was making Ultradyne got picked up by Lunati and they revamped their Voodoo line shortly after.

As a result, I am leaning toward something like this cam for my own build:

Lunati Voodoo #60802
(Keep in mind I have no experience... LOL! )

Also I have heard that the cams Mondello is selling as there own brand is actually a standard Engle grind. Despite people not liking Mondello, I doubt they would re-brand something that wasn't decent.

Other people on here, have much more hands-on advice. I may be spewing lies, but that was what I could beat out of google when I was looking a little while ago.

I am using the #60803 Lunati in mine. I'm very happy with this cam @ 9.7 compression, 2500 stall (now), and 3.42s. Very decent idle, and perfect for cruising or letting her go! I like it.

Yes Mondello cams are Engle cams. Typically you don't want a fast ramp cam (i.e. Comp Xtreme, Lunati VooDoo) for stock style heads. Not enough off-the-seat duration to really help things.

Let me know what you're looking for, I might be able to help.

Thanks for the recommendations so far. Mike, I checked out Comp Cams and it looks like their 42-229-4 grind would give moderate street performance while still having a fair idle. Many years ago I restored all three of my 442's and at that time there were not many options available for the Olds 455 that were not fairly performance oriented as I remember.

I used a couple of the Mondello cams. I even put their bracket racing cam in my 72 and modified my Quadrajet along the lines recommended by Smokey Unik. I was able to get that cam to actually idle well enough to drive on the street. Finally I was able to talk Lunati into a custom grind for me and it is the best cam I have used. Good moderate performance and a smooth idle. Unfortunately when I recently contacted them to make another for me. They had moved over the course of the 10+ years I have been away from my cars and they told me that my grind was based on an older master that could not be used on their newer equipment and so as with most of their other older masters, they threw it out.

Anyway at this stage of the hobby for me I'm more interested in cruising than racing. But I still want a moderate level of performance and that great Olds exhaust note when you get into it. I am currently looking at one of Lunati's Street Master Cams, the 318A2LUN. Has anybody had any experience with this particular grind?

Again, thanks for your suggestions.

Regards,
