It depends on what your trying to accomplish and the rest of the parts used in your rebuild. Are you rebuilding the engine back to stock or going for performance? Those gears won't work for a performance build.

Stock. 8.0-1 compression daily driver - fuel economy, if there is such a thing... I already have a performance minded 455 car, this will likely be a freshened up 403 replacing a 307, so the 2:56's will likely stay, the 403 torque might help it in part throttle cruise situations.

Is this the car with the engine knock? If your on a budget to just get the car up and running then what ever is cheap.

Yes, this is the 307 car with a knock. Would you consider ne lifters on the existing OE cam?

You can go bigger, the stock cam is so mild. Even the lazy Performer cam will work with a stock 403.

I've run the performer in a 350 and it was OK, is there a better alternative?

Yeah, lots of them.

The Performer cam is 204º @ .050" lift and 280º advertised duration. Compare to a Crane Cam that has the same 204º @ .050 but its advertised duration is 260º.
