Rebuild oil pressure question

Finally able to get far enough along with the install to prime the oil pump on a 455 I rebuilt. I’m seeing 40psi on an aftermarket mechanical gauge with a Dewalt drill on low speed (400ish RPM). Oil flow confirmed at all rocker arms.

Is 40psi acceptable?

Thanks

More than acceptable at 400 rpm with flow at all the rockers.

Thank you very much. Hope to fire it up this weekend. Been a long time coming. All this corona stuff has got all the race tracks closed, so I’ve been able to spend a lot more time on my old ride here lately.

400 rpm on the drill equals 800 rpm engine speed, 40 psi at fast idle with cold oil should be fine. Next step check out the pressure when the oil is at normal temperature. If it was my engine I'd be happy with the figures you have.

Roger.

After some driving time, I have noticed that hot idle the oil pressure fluctuates 20-30psi. Slightest bit of throttle and it’s steady on 45. Am I being paranoid. Idle is a bit rowdy with the cam.

20-30 at hot idle is excellent. The oil dash lights switcj on at about 5 psi so you're in great shape.

Good luck!!!
