Qjet issue - needle/seat threads

hey guys,

i found out my 7040252 Qjet lost its needle/seat threads to the former "rebuilder".

looks like they were shot so he drilled them out to fit in a pressed-in-style seat (2 o-rings).

now i know why it was such a pain in the rear to set float level.

heli coil time or better get a new bowl ?

Wow. I've never seen that before.

If HeliCoil makes that thread, then it would make sense to use it, but I personally haven't heard of it.

I'm suspecting you may need a new float bowl, and it may be easier to just get a whole carburetor.

Those have been around for quite a while. Do a web search for QuadraJet needle and seat repair and they pop up. The ones I saw are going for around $12.

Guess I've never searched for one, because I've never stripped a seat thread.

Looks like a crappy type of repair to me. I wonder about the availability of HeliCoils in the correct thread.

The fuel inlet nut in the first picture also looks like a repair type. Might be time for a another carb or fuel bowl.

I've never needed one either, but I spent many years in the auto parts business during high school and college so became aware of them.

I'd recommend against just getting a replacement body. The bottom of the body and the throttle plate generally stay flat, but the top of the body and the airhorn warp against each other. It's very, very difficult to get an airhorn and a body that didn't age together to work well together.
If that's the only problem then I'd try the correct replacement needle first. Won't lose much that way.

Not only that, but it will be a lot harder to find just the body than to find a complete carb.

i think the seat takes a 3/8 thread. the inlet uses a 1" helicoil make one special for the q jet. kit for the inlet is around 195.00 thru qjet repair parts. or call cliff ruggles and talk with him. 740 3972921

Try www.carbguy.com or Kents Qjet.(kentsqjet@hotmail.com) both located in Sweden, not germany but at least inside EU. By far the most experienced q jet rebuilders in europe.
I've had good business with Kent, very helpful and nice guy.

Intersting way to phrase that.

I worked on a 1973 455 a while back... took the air horn off to find that the air horn and/or body mating surface were warped a LOT- like well over 0.100". Yet, the carb behaved well. I did end up replacing it as part of the rebuild I believe.

8-ball, I will look into a carb assembly for you.
