Project Torque Monster

Looking at making a high torque 455 based engine for towing. I have a 1 ton dually 2 wheel drive truck that needs a engine and I want to install a high torque Olds in it. Now to the proposed build....

455 F block bored .060 over
N crank stroked to 4.500
scat 7.1” rods
9.0:1-9.5:1 compression stroker pistons ( I want 87 octane)
Lunati Hydraulic Roller
  • Advertised Duration (Int/Exh): 262/270
  • Duration @ .050 (Int/Exh): 211/219
  • Gross Valve Lift (Int/Exh): .541/.549
  • LSA/ICL: 112/106
  • Valve Lash (Int/Exh): Hyd/Hyd
  • RPM Range: 1400-5400
Double roller timing chain
MSD Pro billet distributor with 6AL ignition and adjustable timing adv/retard ****
C heads ported and polished with Manley severe duty 2.07/1.72 stainless valves (crossovers left intact)
Harland Sharp 5016 Rocker arms
edelbrock performer intake
Quick Fuel Brawler 750 cfm with vacuum secondary

Overall I want 625-650 torque if I can! Horsepower is secondary but I’m curious how much it might make!

A few things.
For max torque don’t use a 1.72 exhaust, 1.68 max.
Next a single pattern cam around 215-220@.050 on a 110 or even a 108 would be better.
Dont waste your money on porting stock heads, buy aluminum’s. Better chance of being able to run 87 with this combo.
And if you really wanted to go the extra mile, use a shorter rod. Harder on the walls but it’ll automatically lower the power peak.
Hope this helps.

Mark I already have the heads and am using what I got as I have the valves already as well. Being that this is such a big engine I’d think it could handle the duration on this cam won’t it?

Ported factory heads with good machine work will easily deliver good performance. I'd use a BIG pan with that stroke.

Actually with less rod journal diameter your oil supply requirements decrease. However with a larger pan you can keep the level lower and away from the crank.

What are you.going to be pulling with this? I swapped a 455 in my dads 81 GMC half ton truck, people are amaze how well it runs and drives. Other than the engine swap, I changed nothing from the 350 Olds diesel that the truck originally had. I’m getting ready to swap in a limited slip rearend with 3.73 gears and a 700R4 trans, should be a major improvement over the TH350C and the 3.08 gears. The stock diesel is TIGHT, I’m hoping the remanufacted corvette torque coverter works well.

I’ll be pulling a 28’ enclosed pace trailer with one of my cars, tools, parts, gas etc. My 71’ is about 3400 pounds. Torque is King!

Even the 305 gas TH350C converter stalls around 1600 rpm. That should launch very nice, my 94 Z71 with that combo except an Olds 350 was nice. Of course you know transmissions and know that the 700R4 is not the greatest transmission behind big torque. Madmax442, if you have those current parts it should work Ok and have plenty of grunt for what you need it for. A body headers should work in the 73 through 87, 91 in some body style. They worked on my 78 1/2 ton with an Olds 350.

i got a smoking deal on a 9C1 cop car 700r4 (it was given to me &#128526 there have been lots of parts I have wanted to try Raybestos makes a special clutch pack (called the Z-Pac) it’s single sided clutch discs for the. 3-4 clutch pack which has ALWAYS been a issue with the 4L60. I’m also useing Sonnax smart shell (in place of the factory drive
shell) it appears to be stronger than the Beast drive shell. Wide 2-4 band, super servo, big boost valve, 5 pinion planetaries from the 4L65-4L70E, etc. Obviously I’m not settikg it up with really hard shifts. I’m planning to work it pretty hard. If it breaks, it will be interesting to see what the next weak link is. If it doesn’t, I’ll do a tear down sometime in the future to see how things are holding up.

I’ll be using a Th-400 and going the way of a gear vendors as well. As far as converter I’ll probably have one custom built after the engine is done.

I have a gear bender in my 69, it’s the only thing I have ever successfully bid for on eBay! If I was starting with nothing, and buying everything new, and had to do it all over again I’d probably do a 4L80E. The price of the controllers have come way down in price, and the lock up converter would be nice, especially towing.

I’d rather just keep it simple with no sensors or electronics on it to make it run.
