Pcv valve issue

Hello oldsmobile family , I have a stock overhaul 73 olds 455 that the stock valve cover pcv valve grommet that keeps letting the pcv valve slide out . Of course wasting a little oil . My question is , is the pcv valve necessary or can I just put a breather cap in that area? I have a breather cap on the passenger side and only reusing this to connect vacuum hose to elderbrock carb.

The PCV valve is necessary. Before PCV cars used a road draft tube designed to vent the crankcase. Make sure you have a new grommet in your valve cover for the PCV.

Motors didn't last very long before PCV valves. They gummed up well before 100000 miles. UTG had an interesting video on the subject.
