oldsmobile 455 intake
hello.currently im in the process of overhauling my 1971 olds 455 out of i believe a 442.i will need to replace the intake becuse its rusted out.what would be the best intake for stock specs?

If you'd like to keep it stock create a thread in the parts wanted section. I've got an extra one here in Oregon, but it would be good to find one relatively close to your location to save on shipping costs. Purchase price could be between $25-50, add shipping of maybe another $25-50 for a replacement to your door. John

The Edelbrock 04B is an older intake. It won't clear HEI ignition but it is a great mid range aftermarket intake. If you can buy one on the cheap it would probably be worth it, especially if it is in good shape. Oldsguy had one on his 455. It ran great.

I would think you could find several different aftermarket intakes used from $125-150. The performer is a decent all around driver manifold, and I think there have been a couple of those offered up for sale in the last month or two. Have you gone through the parts for sale section? John

Don't underestimate the Toronado intake. Oldsmobile put all the best stuff on the Toros, I doubt they would skimp on the intake manifold. I would just put a carb spacer on it. They perform as well as any other cast iron manifold. I'm keeping mine.

they didnt skimp, it was a hood clearence issue.

where you at?
Oldsy where you at, I have a 72 stock intake, that has been sand blasted and painted (red) I am in jersey ( exit 9 on the Tpke) I was going to use it on my 455 going in my 69 but decided to go aftermarket once the roller rockers and stuff came into the picture

I've seen an SAE white paper from back in the day ('66?) written by Olds Engineering extolling the virtues of the Toronado intake manifold. Their numbers showed it flows better than the normal big block manifold. I'm not sure which one they were comparing it to.

Hansen, Went to New York, just came back in the beginning of the week, but didn't hit the Jersey Turnpike until the top, at Newark, only $1.60, and then through the Holland Tunnel and into Lower Manhattan. Used to hit it at the bottom, after going over the Delaware Memorial Bridge going up I95 from Ft. Bragg to NYC in the early and mid '70s. I enjoyed so much being back home.

not a bad choice, mine came with a set of washers, and zinc to melt down into the exhaust crossover. its a pretty decent casting, and unfortinately options are limited, it pretty much boils down to the rpm, or the torqer. (probably didnt spell that right)

Too bad you're not closer...I have a 455 engine (396021 F) with heads, intake, etc that's going to be for sale soon for $200 and includes the 1000 lbs. (max) 4 point engine stand. 455 needs a rebuild.

Shizzy is correct. I have two 69 Toronados. Any other intake will not let you close the hood or you have to cut holes. Not sure about other olds models but Edelb Perf Intake won't fit in a toronado. I bought a Edelb Perf intake and even had it milled down as far as I could go . And it still wouldn't fit. Also be sure to install the solid steel heat riser plugs that go under the intake manifold, in the middle of the heads unless you drive in alaska year round you might keep fighting vapor lock as I did, our peel paint off the intake, or degrade vacuum hoses prematurely. I also can affirm that the Valley Pan Gasket ( turkey gasket) does help get the oil down to the bottom end faster also reduces the amount of oil splashing up to the intake, if you leave the heat plugs out I could definitely see how you could cook the splashed oil on the underside of the intake (as somebody brought up earlier.I see no reason Not to use the valley pan gasket Unless you were putting it on a boat . ( because electrolysis [galvonic action] could possibly pitt your heads /or intake manifold)
