olds 455 questions

olds 455 questions

I am looking to get a used olds 455 block for rebuilding... what are some things i should look for... what blocks, heads are better etc.... casting marks? i will be putting it in a 66 f-85 four door... want to put a turbo 400 behind it.... i dont need anything crazy for power just dont want to get the worst one ....where are the casting marks on the block and heads at??

Read the sections on "Engines", "Blocks", and "Heads" for more info.

Keep in mind that the last 455 Olds was made in 1976. Unless you plan to pay big bucks, you will likely end up taking whatever you can find. The 73-76 smog motors are by far the most common and will make a perfectly acceptable foundation for your build. The J heads used on those motors are not desireable for all-out performance, but with some mild port cleanup they will make excellent, torque-producing street heads.

If you do manage to score an earlier motor, all the better, but don't kill yourself looking for one.
