71 Oldsmobile 98s are AWSOME! To find a rear end for that car will be a bit more difficult than finding one for a Cutlass. Any 98, Delta 88, or Custom Cruiser from 71-76 would swap in without modifications. He might want to check out a Custom Cruiser in a salvage yard, they were probably more likely to have a posi-traction rear end since they would be used for towing and hauling. Finding a good used part is the problem since the B/C bodies aren't as popular as the A body. I don't know of any aftermarket suppliers that do parts for these cars.

There are lot of gear sets that work in that rear end. If the only thing your going to do is race it I would go lower than 3.42 more like 3.73, but if your going drive it daily. I would rather have 3.08 or even 3.23 with a spool or a locker.

We have a member who goes by Monzaz. He knows just about everything you would want to know about differentials, including the type O. Give him a shout if you need any more info or help.

Like Oldsguy said, he knows everything there is to know about differentials.
FWIW, I don't think you will be able to easily find gears for your 98. I don't believe you can swap gears from an A body into a B or C body. I think the differential is different.
BTW, If you put 3.73s into your 98 it will be a dog on the highway (and that is just sacrelige for a 98). If you want to race exclusively then you should look into buying an A body. B and C bodies are cool, they just aren't built to race. They are built for crusing.
