not enough fuel

I have a 74 455cid engine that is stuttering real bad at any throttle position if I go up any size hill and does the same thing if I get on it. It picks up really well for a second then it just dies and starts jumping. At idle the fuel filter is half full then at any higher rpm it drops down to about a quarter full. The pick up is clean. Could it be any thing other than the pump? Thanks.

Gas cap? Some are vented some non-vented.

You say the pick up is clean. Did you inspect all the lines? Even small pin holes and cracks might cause this symptom.

No, but I will be doing several checks on the fuel system this weekend. I went in the hospital for an extended stay not long ago and a "buddy" (professional) mechanic did some things I don't approve of. I had an application appropriate quad on it, now thanks to him I have an 86 feedback dual capacity quad on it. I don't even know why. Thanks though. I will definitely check the lines.

If it accelerates fine for a moment and then dies out you should check your float setting too.
