new gaskets

So I have my engine out on a stand. Im going to repaint it. I am putting a new water pump on it and I have been advised to go ahead and put a new timing chain set and oil pump in while its out. My question is should I pull t he intake and put new gaskets there too while its out?

What are you working on? Is the current intake stock? Is it aluminum or cast iron? Does it show any sign of coolant leakage at any of the four corners? Does it leak any oil at the front or rear?

If it is completely dry I'd leave it alone, getting a good reseal can be tricky.

Its all stock out of a 74, 98. Hasn't been run in years and there was some evidence of oil leakage at the rear of the engine around the distributor. I did have it started long enough to run the prime in the carb before i pulled it.

Since you have the engine out of the car go ahead and replace all the gaskets. At least the intake, valve covers, timing chain & oil pan. If you don't you might reinstall it and find out the oil pan gasket leaks.

Have all of them except intake now. Is there a particular brand that is recommended for the intake gasket?

I use the FelPro intake manifold gasket but I cut the turkey tray out of the center. Also, use the Right Stuff gasket maker instead of the included end rails.

I would also replace the rear main bearing seal. A lot easier with the engine out of the car/

Sooo you don't need the turkey tray part? What is it there for?

The turkey tray is there to keep the oil off of the bottom of the intake manifold. I've NEVER been able to successfully install a fully intact turkey tray intake manifold gasket. I've often wondered how the intake manifold and intake manifold gasket were installed in the factory.
