fuel pump replace

I'm replaceing the fuel pump on a 76 olds cutlass 455ci motor. Question how do I get the rod up so I can install the pump. I tried screw driver, hacksaw blade, any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

Hi Joseph
Oldsmobile didn't use a rod. Its a round piece that's offset, so you can rotate the crankshaft a little and move the offset so that its easier to install. Also be sure your putting it on the correct way, which has the hose fittings on the top not the bottom. I'll see if I can come up with any pictures of the piece to post for you. If you plan on working on your car much it would be worthwhile to get the Chassis Service Manual of your year. It can help you get through lots of problems like this.

Here's one, see the round piece bolted to the center of the top timing gear? Your fuel pump arm will go on top of that.

OK, here's a better one. And I'd forgotten the fuel pump arm goes on top instead of underneath like other makes.

NO Olds used a rod. That's a Chevy thing. The round piece is the fuel pump eccentric - essentially a cam lobe. The "upside down" fuel pump is a Chevy thing also.

Don't forget a dab of grease at the arm's contact point, and use the correct SAE type small-OD flat washer on that fine thread upper stud/nut. As usual, start all fasteners before tightening any. A loose pump might make starting the fuel line into the pump easier too.

OF course you have verified that the new pump has more or less identical fittings- number, size, direction, thread type- to minimize changeover hassle.
