Hello olds family.
I finally picked up a 455 block today and i'm ready to build it into a monster(kind of)! I'm living on ebay and looking for parts to throw in it.I was going to go with edelbrock heads from summit but realized I can just buy stock heads from somewhere and get them worked on.Can't I???
I'll be taking my time on this motor and hopefully getting a earful from you guys so can anyone start me off with some assistance on where to start?
I'm going to get it bored .30 over at the shop next week.Does anyone have parts for a 455 and/or some good heads???

 

I think stock heads would be sufficient and does it need to be bored? You should let the machinist determine that after he gets it.

 

There are several 455 builds in the big block threads. I have a complete build sheet under 455 engine swap that might give you some ideas. Ask questions there are several smart guys on this site. They all gave me ideas for my build. Good luck with your build

first things first.
Have a machine shop check the block for cracks, and determine if it just needs to be honed, or has to be bored out.

Next, determine a 'horsepower and torque level to aim for.

 

Your machinist will also determine if the block needs to be line honed, and trued. These two steps are VERY IMPORTANT and should not be overlooked if the block needs extensive machining.

 

the only reason I said im going to get it bored was because one of the pistons had frozen in the cylinder.

 

ahh, ok.
Was it stuck in there from rust?
Or a bad piston ring?
or a misc. catastrophic event?

Every piece will tell a story of how it failed usually.
Once that is determined and the damage is assesed, you can figure out your options/

 

There still may be a possibility that you will not have to overbore it, really it would be up to the machinist you use and what he finds out after dis-assembly. Good luck in the build though.

 

I believe its due to rust.I will definitely leave it in the hands of the machinist and see what he says about it. I'll keep you guys posted on it.

 

You will also want your crank ground and the connecting rods resized. If you get a competent machinist he will help you through the rebuilding process.

 

I have a Good set of Oldsmobile heads letter E that came off a running 1970 Oldsmobile 98. They could use a new valve job, other than that they are in excellent condition!!! Let me know if you are interested.
