Exhaust Manifold Gasket Yes or No?

Hey Guys I am working on a build and have a question? I’ve got a brand newset of Mondello aluminum heads and a brand new set of exhaust manifolds fromThorton. Would you suggest using a gasket because of the difference in metaltypes or just bolt them on with no gasket? Any advice you can offer would beappreciated. Thanks

I had the same issue. In the end I bought a set of copper gaskets. Planning on finishing up and starting the car this weekend. Will let you know how it goes.
I didnt have new heads or manifolds though. With new metal you might just want to skip the gaskets

Since I haven't used this combination, you probably should wait to hear from someone who has. Metallurgical class said that when you have two dissimilar metals in contact there is the potential for corrosion of at least one of them. Whatever you decide on the gasket, I'd recommend putting something on the threads of the attaching bolts, like anti-seize compound. I'm assuming that Mondello had no comments on the subject.

Many of the oldsmobiles did not come with gaskets, however I also have a Cadillac Eldorado, and that did come with gaskets from the factory. Why that is I really don't know. The Caddy has very low miles and I have no doubt the engine and manifolds are just like they are from the factory

I would use the gaskets with the aluminum heads.

Yes I agree, aluminum heads with the exhaust manifold are odd but I do notbelieve I will have the room for headers. Perhaps down the road I can tryfinding a set to fit in there. I am going to use a copper gasket with thisapplication. I just feel that the two different metals will cause a problemdown the road. I spoke to Troy over at Thorton and he said I could do either. Iam going to pick up my block from the performance shop next weekend and I willrun it past him. I will keep you posted. I will post some pictures of the motoronce I start putting it back together.

Unfortunately, there are no aftermarket headers available for a 70 98. If you want headers you will have to get them custom made.

Pat, those are cool headers! I didn't even know they were around. Did you install those in your 57 or 48? They are even cheaper than the Heddman Headers I bought for my 71. Those might be worth looking into.

I had the same question and Thorton told me I don't need em.
I used them anyway with no problems and no leaks
