Before I put the pan on my 455 I noticed the dipstick and tube lead to the "full" mark on the dipstick being above the lowest point of the counterweight. That doesn't seem right. That seems like it would lead to a fair amount of aeration, wouldn't it?

Does anyone have any pictures of where the dipstick locates below the block?

This is on a 68 RWD block and pan, stock. I haven't removed or messed with it since I got it.

 

The tube and indicator are a matched set in order to get the correct reading. There are various length tubes/indicators for SBO and BBO depending upon year and application. It's possible to mix tube / indicator lengths and have the situation you describe. You can still use what you have, just add the correct amount of oil, check where the level is on the indicator, and scribe a new FULL mark at that point.

 

small detail but very important. Scribing a new mark is a very good idea but if you ever decide to sell the car a buyer may notice and wonder what else you improvised on. Completely up to you but to me it falls under the " might as well" replace with a new correct one. That's why I'm always broke.

 

Is there a part number on your indicator??? If you have the number, it can be matched to the correct tube... Or at least tell you if it is correct for your vehicle/engine application...
