what is the best way to go at it? I was going to use the old bearing on the pinion to check but, I have long end up destroying that bearing. Any other ways to go at it with out pressing the new bearing on to check?

Its is a completely new set pinion ring gear and carrier.

 

Easiest way is to hone out an old bearing enough so you can "bang" it on and off easily and then do a final check with a new bearing installed. Other than that, maybe 507 Olds or Monzaz can give you some better tips?

 

I use a bearing that is honed-out.
I would not bother with checking the pinion depth with a dial indicator.The truth is in the pattern.Pick a shim to start with & get the pinion/yoke in there.Then install the carrier,and shim that to achieve .008"-.010" backlash.Now check the pattern with some compound.This will tell you exactly which way you need to go with the pinion shim,before final assembly.
If you don't have any compound,lipstick will work.Just don't make a habit of carrying around women's lipstick.

Yes this is a good tool - But do double check your pattern after final press on bearing is installed JUST TO BE SURE. I have seen some bearing differences in years. All the different make SHOULD BE THE SAME... But sometimes you get a turd. Make sure you DO NOT use the new seal and DO NOT use a crush sleeve to check your pattern / pinion depth. These items should only be installed when you are sure all the set-up is complete and you are ready for final install.

lastly whats the recommended gear oil?

 

I put 85/140 in all of my rears,but 75/90 is fine too.

 

I always recommend filling it with oil ... lol. I have had guy forget the oil... lol. NOT GOOD.

If you are using a Auburn or Eaton be sure to use conventional oil not Synthetic. It has to do with their warranties...
