unlike Chevy, Olds engines pull the cam into the block. I shim the bolt so the head is close to the cover (flush with block, separated by gasket thickness) occasionally, just so the cam can't walk and disturb the ignition timing. I will eventually look around for a brass cup plug that fits over the nose of the bolt and trim the bolt nose for that amount of clearance.

OPP sells a roller bearing that goes on the cam bolt. This way there is no metal wear with brass or alum. Nice piece from Andy Miller. http://www.oldsperformanceproducts.c...tures/2103.jpg

I had BTR machine a torrington bearing in behind the cam into the block to take care of the thrust like Rund said. My ex-engine builder installed a bolt in the timing cover and put pressure on the cam bolt, putting the pressure in the wrong direction. You also cannot just install a torrington bearing between the cam and block.

Did the engine come with a special bolt installed from the factory? Is it needed?

Anyone know if this part came equipped from the factory? Is it needed or is it a money maker like the oil restriction plugs ?

I use the roller bearing to keep the camshaft from walking back and forth. I have used the bronze bushings in the past. The timing of your distributor will be more constant. It is a great idea. I also dont use restrictors, but I do use the cam bearing.
