I currently have this unit in my ‘70 W-30 4-Speed. Right now the car will crank but will not turn over. I have no Spark to the #1 cylinder. Engine is 100% stock except for this conversion from points. I want to buy a replacement unit before I take the air cleaner assembly off to get to the distributor. It’s possible that the coil is bad - I do have a replacement one in case. But can anyone recommend a replacement breakerless ignition part ?
Just to be clear, "crank" and "turn over" mean the same thing - the engine turns with the starter motor. I ***-U-ME you mean that you are not getting spark. Have you verified this by checking at the coil wire? Or have you only checked the No. 1 plug wire? Checking at the coil wire bypasses any possible problems in the distributor cap, rotor, or individual wires, so start troubleshooting there.
Just to clarify. Yesterday the car started. I waited for the car to warm up - she ran for about a minute and then stalled. Would not restart. This morning she started - ran for about 5 seconds - and then stalled. Would not restart. Battery fully charged, full tank of gas. So far I have only checked the Spark at the #1 cylinder. No spark.
What is the best way to check for spark at the coil wire ? My car is a fresh Resto - engine is freshly painted. Wire from distributor to coil is pretty short.
12VDC power to the coil + when the key is in the run position?
Good engine grounds?
How long have you been cranking on the plugs? Could they be fouled? Had this happen to me. The spark tester said no spark. Fouled plugs!
I've ran the Breakerless hall-effect style for 5 years now. Last year, I went to drive the car out of the garage, and it just died like the key turned off. No spark. I've had issues with coils, assumed that was the problem, throw a coil on, still no spark.
I assume it's the Breakerless, pull the distributor, change the Breakerless module, it started, put it into gear, rolled about 5 feet forward, and it just died. Now I'm pissed...
I used the original coil trigger wire, and it turns out the wire inside the distributor had rubbed a small spot through where GM crimped on the line stop and was grounding on the distributor housing. The Breakerless modules were fine.
