I am getting close to being "done" with the 455 install, however, with a stock "S" hood, I don't have much room now for air filter options. It has a Quick Fuel (Holley) Brawler on a 1" spacer on top of a Holley Street Dom intake. It is quite tall. This is the last thing to buy before driving it regularly.
What have others done in this situation that didn't require changing the hood? Low profile carb hat to remote-ish filter? What did you use?
Not sure how to deal with this yet...

Ah, cool, I just have very little clearance above the carb horn. I am gonna go out and measure it, but it is looking like I can't have anything taller than about 3.5" above the carb circle base. That's like only 2" above the horn before I am into the hood...
I was wondering when I’d be asked that haha. I needed some spacing due to the secondary accel pump hitting the intake carb flange. The intake is flanged for square (Holley) AND spread bore (QJet) and is an issue. I could likely get away with a 1/4”. However, a 1” spacer was easy to get. Now, I wish I had rethought this whole stackup.
I made measurements tonight with crumpled aluminum foil and the maximum I can be is 3.5” from carb air cleaner flange to the top of the air cleaner. That’s when it touches at the shortest point.
3.5” at the front to the top of the foil. There’s nothing I have found that is less than that except for something like this:
If I really wanted to get that 1" back, I would pull the carb, stuff rags into the intake and grind the area that needs clearancing so the carb can just mount directly to the intake. If I can't find something that will work, I just may have to do that.

Just throwing this out there...would it possible to do a little "massaging" of the flange so the pump would clear? Then you'd be able to go with a more practical setup.

Check out my post #8.
But yes, this would be the "right" way to do it. I will likely do that later and just buy the POS Edelbrock triangle right now to get me on the road without sucking anything into the carb...
I saw those, however, with the electric choke and aftermarket throttle linkage stuff, I wasn't sure if any one of them would clear everything with that much drop.
Call or text me and we can bounce it off each other...
toranado air cleaner may work, its a low ptofile unit.
The Toronado INTAKE is low profile. The air cleaner height is limited by the air filter element. And think about dropped base air cleaners before you use one. At some point the inlet restriction becomes the clearance between the under side of the air cleaner lid and the air horn, which negates any flow benefits from the taller intake. Those K&N filter lids don't help if they are butted up against the underside of the hood.
What Bruce and I are gonna try to do is use a drop base and then adjust where the top ends up by selecting a filter element that maximizes height but is *just* under the hood line. The hood is a fixed amount above the air horn of the carb. We wanna try to have the lid end up just under that. This will maximize the lid location above the primary air horn.
Those paper air filters can be crushed to a lower profile. When I worked at auto parts stores I saw quite a few folks come in with a squashed air filter.

Agree - get the lowest drop base air cleaner that will clear the HEI, throttle linkage and fuel feed lines. Then figure out your filter size to get you where the lid/stud needs to be. I'd think you should be able to get at least a 4" filter in there and probably more.
Suprised it is so tight with the S hood. It is a nice change from a flat G body hood. I currently have a RPM intake, 3/4" spreadbore to squarebore adapter, Speedmaster throttle body and factory air cleaner converted to dual snorkel on my 358. I ran an Ebay special 14" drop base on my G body. Just fit the tallest filter possible.
I hate the look, but at least it won't suck in road crap. I need to change out the throttle bracket to something small and simple and then do the drop bass air cleaner. I have about 1/2" of clearance
Yes, I have all of the original hardware. The compressor is long since been toast. I was going to reinstall everything for completeness, but then I would have to pull it all again just to replace it when I start that project. That is the next big thing to do especially here in Florida. Sorta like you out west except with humidity🤣
