AC Muffler

AC Muffler
I apparently have the older, separated by a hose muffler from my compressor, at least I am assuming that is what that insulated thing with the non-stock zip ties is that is hooked to one end of my compressor.
I assume these are replaceable. Main question is, does the car really care where it goes since it's just on hoses? I mean, could it migrate a few inches either way, if say I wanted to put a radiator overflow tank there or something? I'd think the later one that is on a rigid line to the compressor and hanging off it is where it is, but this style may have flexibility.

Sorry about the Fram, it shouldn't be there. It's just there while the tank is iffy.
Thanks for advice, Eric, although I wonder about the zip ties. Previous owner monkeyed with the thing, and I haven't worked on it seriously in nine years, though that will change soon when I move it down to my new place.

Something doesn't look correct about the muffler, especially what appears to be worm clamps on the lines connecting to it. Not sure what year car you have but most of the fittings on AC lines to a muffler are crimped with a hydraulic press.

Right, now looking at it again it is on the high side so muffler it is, but i agree the worm clamps say somthing is a miss.Nick

Some GM cars of this era (especially from the "C" Division) did use worm gear clamps on some A/C hoses.
They were "specials" that had a locating finger for the edge of the hose.
That does look terrible, though.

Previous owner, I says!
Thanks for advice.
So, I can get custom length AC hoses, correct? The plan is for another type of hose to go right through that area, so the muffler needs to go in front of the fenderwell.
