455 for rebuild price?

I was searching Craigslist today at work and noticed there are at least 4 olds 455 engines around me for sale between 100 and 200 bucks, they are in need for rebuild, one has sat for 15 years, two of them have the transmission as well still attached. Is this a good price for one that needs an overhaul? Might get one just to have around and start rebuilding it....just want a few opinions.

Im no expert but that sound like great prices. In my area I am seeing $250 to $500 with no trans and in most cases, no heads. I would go for it if it's in the budget.

It's how machine shops check for cracks. It is routinely done before beginning any machine work.

Below is the correct definition of magnaflux testing. HOWEVER it is now being done at most shops with a UV chemical dye that penitrates cracks. When a blacklight is passed over the metal defect it is very noticeable. this method is preferred because its cheaper, easier, cleans up well, no special machine required and well... any shop monkey can do it if they can see.

a. General. This is a rapid, non-destructive method of locating defects at or near the surface of steel and its magnetic alloys by means of correct magnetization and the application of ferromagnetic particles.

b. Basic Principles. For all practical purposes, magnaflux inspection may be likened to the use of a magnifying glass. Instead of using a glass, however, a magnetic field and ferromagnetic powders are employed. The method of magnetic particle inspection is based upon two principles: one, that a magnetic field is produced in a piece of metal when an electric current is flowed through or around it; two, that minute poles are set up on the surface of the metal wherever this magnetic field is broken or distorted.

c. When ferromagnetic particles are brought into the vicinity of a magnetized part, they are strongly attracted by these poles and are held more firmly to them than to the rest of the surface of the part, thereby forming a visible indication

Magnafluxxing is done with the ferro magnetic particles and a magnet. Dye penetrant is what you are describing. They are both methods of non-destructive diagnosis.

ahh i am a shop monkey and have done this for a long time (its important to magnaflux) it requiers a magnet or magnetic feild even! it requiers a special light that cost a butt load (high intensity black light) a soulution suspendid in water a 240 volt coill wrap around what your magging,, the uv chemical is for testing aluminum and is quite messy

That is a great price for a 455,even if it is the 73-77 smogger version, with J-heads & EGR intake. If it's an older one, then it's an even better deal.

You can buy the dye penetrants at the auto parts store to put in your transmission, power steering pump, crankcase etc. They help identify the leak when it is a mystery.
