455 machine work done, moving forward

Hello all I’m finally getting back around to my 455 rebuild and I figured I would get the necessary pointers for a newbie from anyone willing to help. Updates include F block baked and bored .030 over. cam bearings are in
freeze plugs in. I just removed the burrs in the oil galley. GA heads cleaned up nicely as well new springs and valves pretty mild stuff not building a drap car. Original rods with higher compression pistons and rings. Mild rv cam and lifters from comp cams. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated, should I be worried about oil return issues that kind of thing. Thanks all

I don’t think the oil return issue is nearly as big a deal as some people think. And if you look at the oiling diagram for a Olds engine, the restrictors that go up to the cam bearings do NOTHING but limit the oil to the bearings. The pushrods and valvetrain is oiled thru the lifters.


Double check all the machine work, clean everything, check all the clearances, work cleanly and carefully. Good luck.

Thanks Matt, that’s kind of what I suspected as well. I will not be putting any restrictors in this build that much we can be sure. I did put a very small chamfer in the valve cover oil return holes because of the angle but I think I will leave it at that

Those a pretty big gaping holes in the BBO, good to clean up. I usually take a tapered drill bit and open up the smaller holes on the SBO to around 1/2". I also, if it's apart and still needs the final surgical cleaning, take a sand paper roll and polish the lifter valley if you're really concerned. Good call, I suppose, on the head side. They really don't get blocked until years of sludge gum them up or something valvetrain related falls apart and plugs up the hole.
