I'm not an engineer or a head specialist at all and I'm sure probably going to **** people off by saying this. This is just my .02 but I'd say the Edelbrocks are better from the factory bare or fully assembled. From what I've read, the casting quality is better and overall materials are better as well. Can the Pro comp heads be made to perform........ Absolutely! I think all of the major players in the game that have the abilities to transform either to perform anyway they please. Yes you are spending more for the Edelbrocks but I think you would most likely have to do less to them to get them to where they need to be to bolt them on. Am I wrong, maybe but I'll take my chances and spend the money.

If I had my way..... I'd restart and advance what CJ Batten Started! If those heads could be recast with better materials and updated chamber designs like the Wise heads are supposed to be! If Mr Batten had been able to keep making heads for the Olds even after production of the Olds V-8 and NASCAR program had ceased we would have more viable and more advanced options than we do today!

No one has heard of anyone using a wise head for a race engine yet! Some are saying it is another Bulldog head! A lot of people lost there money on that deal.

The way I see it it's all about your goal. If I was building an engine AND I NEEDED HEADS, meaning I don't have a core, I would seriously look at all the heads available on the market and see which one would be appropriate for what I intend to do with my car.
For street engines, IMO Edelbrock or Procomp are damn near the same thing aside from the price. Neither is perfect and both should be checked before installing. BTR says he doesn't like PC, this is mostly because he has a recipe for Edelbrocks and he doesn't wanna hurt his sales. One thing to remember, BTR is a vendor who sells Edelbrock's, so his opinion is not valid in this debate.

For race I would go with Rocket Racing heads. John's heads are proven to put out power.
This is what I would do, some may do it different.

Also one thing to remember, if you have complete engine that you are rebuilding and your goal is a street engine, stick with what you have. Even a set of J heads can be reworked to have fun with on the street with occasional strip visit.

This is JMO.

Wow that is rich! Explain if you will! BTR makes street motors and racing motors. He is no different than Mark with the procomps except that Bills engines for racing are very fast. His street motors are very fast. You slam BTR then support Rocket racing. Would you agree the BTR is at a higher level of performance? How about Rocket racing?Ebrocks and pro comps are not even close to the same thing.

Just an FYI. The Wise Performance head comes with an exhaust flange. Like the Batten, Wise has their own unique exhaust ports. Which means you have to custom build your headers. Typical Olds headers don't fit. For street, Edelbrock is an excellent choice for the head. Being Joe Mondello helped Edelbrock design them. They should be good! And they are. I've bolted on several sets and they make an improvement straight out of the box. ProComp... Don't know anything about em. And I won't pretend to. The biggest obstacle with the iron heads are the short radius in the runners to the valve. And the 2 inner exhaust ports that dog leg together which robs HP.
Bottom line is "Cubic Dollars". How fast ya wanna go.......?
Oh BTW, Wise has a customer running around grudge racing with a 945HP Olds. Normally aspirated.....

When I talked to Brad, he told me it was a local customer to him who street races. And foot brakes as well. Don't know name or ET. He didn't elaborate. If I was to guess with that horsepower that car is somewhere in the 9's... Depending on the car....

So just to fill anyone in. I'm not into pissing matches. My input is from experience and talking straight to the horse.

BTR is different than RR for one simple reason, RR has his own heads and BTR reworks edelbrocks. That's why I said BTR's opinion doesn't matter in this conversation because he will be biased towards the product he sells. Mark is in a different ballpark altogether, he doesn't sell procomp, edelbrock or RR. He will build your engine any you want it, BTR heads, procomps, RR, edelbrocks, iron and whatever else can be bolted on.

I wouldn't say that BTR just does edelbrocks! If you want your build done to your specifics I'm sure Bill does it that way! His book describes builds he does with all kinds of head combos. If he doesn't do it the way the customer wants it then I don't think he'd still be in business!

No doubt, but he sells edelbrocks. That makes his opinion on edelbrock vs. procomp debate biased towards the product he sells.

CutlassEFI shipped my procomps yesterday. He did some work to them to get them up to par. Will update this thread on quality of them once they arrive. He said procomps have more meat in the areas that matter. But he did also say out of the box EDELS are better. So

D.A.D are you aware of all the brags that Brad wise has made? When called out on ROP he produced nothing for proof.Just saying the horse might have a tall story. I am sure you have heard of ROP right!

X2, you're exactly right. Bill is an Edelbrock dealer, he buys them direct without seats and guides. Yes he will be biased for sure. I'm neither an Edelbrock or Procomp dealer, although I have a close acquaintance at Edelbrock. BUT for most builds the Procomps are a better value imo. You can make upwards of 500hp with simple Procomps. Your build is proof of that.

Um are you saying you are not buying sets of heads reworking them for customers?? No difference from what Bill is doing!!Define Dealer out of the box. That would be getting supplied heads from Edelbrock with no rework complete ready to run and selling them as received from Edelbrock.

Lets say heads are both bare setting next to each other. Procomps cast over seas. Edelbrocks are cast in America. But the aluminum blanks come from overseas then cast by edlebrock . After both heads are cast and reworked. They both perform close to the same. Why would u spend more?

Um, why do you and a few others on this forum feel the need to question they way Mark builds an engine? You guys are constantly on him about everything to do with these heads. He is here to help and build a perfect beast for the street for a great price.
Why do you care how he gets the heads, what he does to them and how he goes about things?
What do you offer in the engine building game ? What type of heads do you use when building an engine?
Mark builds an awesome street/strip engine and has proven it !! He also proved he could make good street power and meet the goals of street car guys for a decent price. Eden also tells you guys continually how happy he is with his pro-comp headed machine.
He not only builds on heck of a street engine, he also builds killer stout engines as well. For a good price !!!!
So WTF are you guys trying to prove here, find something to do man !! Leave an honest engine builder alone, Mark is always here to help and give solid advice , again what do you have to offer? Nothing that's what I thought . Your just being a huge PITA !!!!

The pro comps haven't proved they are equal in performance to Edelbrock head. This is a discussion with different opinions. I had 2 sets heads that basically out of the box ready to run. Pro comps are cheaper but i do not see any evidence of better or equal.

Why are you even suggesting haters? Have you even read this whole discussion? I gave credit to Mark and Bernard! What am seeing is haters towards a proven head because of price. No one even question rocket racing as being over priced and hating on them!

Two hard core racers say that pro comps are not equal on ROP.A third is a parts vender also says pro comps are not equal on ROP.These are not haters. I am not hating on pro comps. Mark says these pro comps are good heads for mild builds at a lower price on rop.I don't disagree with that. Just my opinion iron heads can do as good as pro comps! The proof is in the racers who have gone very fast with iron heads. Does that not say everything!

With iron heads some of those guys who have gone fast are driving on the street with them. It is called knowing what it takes. I am no expert. I have a decent engine that ran mid twelves many times in a street car. I never tried to go faster than that with the motor. At the time NHRA had a roll bar limit at twelve flat i think. Since changed to 11.50 anything faster requires roll bar. Choices is what we have.
